Looking to snap a three-game slide, the Fordham volleyball team got off to a great start on Tuesday by winning set one against the UConn Huskies, 25-23, in Storrs, Connecticut. The Rams though could not hold off the Huskies' Mattison Quayle, who finished with 21 kills, as UConn rallied to win the match in four sets by scores of 25-19, 25-18, and 25-20.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 5-15 on the season, while UConn evens theirs at 10-10.
Set one was a strong start for the Rams, earning a 25-23 set win. With the score tied at 23 all, Lisa Hipp connected for her third kill of the set to earn set point. UConn's Mattison Quayle tried to respond, but committed an attack error, giving Fordham the set win.
In set two, the Rams were again right there with the Huskies trailing by one, 17-16, following a Randi Ewing kill. UConn then reeled off six straight points to take control of the set and even the match at one set apiece.
Set three went the way of the Huskies, as UConn hit .423 for the set, committing just one error, while holding Fordham to a .037 hitting clip.
The Rams tried to force a fifth set, getting out to a three-point lead early in set four at 9-6. UConn though responded with a 14-4 run to take a 20-13 lead. The Huskies remained ahead by seven, 23-16, before Fordham had one last surge to try and tie the match. Kills by Hipp, Ewing, and Carina Thompson, as well as a block by Krissy Buongiorno, got Fordham back within three, 23-20, but an attack error by the Rams and Quayle's 21st kill of the match ended Fordham's comeback attempt.
For Fordham, Brittany Daulton led the attack with 11 kills and 12 digs, while Hipp had 11 kills, 11 digs, and three blocks. Ewing chipped in nine kills and six blocks with Lindsay Ritchie adding five kills and two blocks. Sara Konkel dished out 21 assists to Fordham attackers with Mary Diamantidis having 13 assists and six digs.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Friday, October 14th, when the Rams travel to George Washington for a 6:00 PM Atlantic 10 match.
