Final Stats
Dayton, Ohio -
Dayton is known as the birthplace of aviation, the city where Wilbur and Orville Wright came up with plans for a flying machine. That's the background behind the University of Dayton's nickname, the Flyers. Well there were no planes flying in the UD Arena on Saturday night but there were plenty of Dayton long distance shots soaring through the air as the Flyers connected on 13 three-pointers to defeat Fordham, 91-57, in an Atlantic 10 contest.
With the loss, Fordham's seventh straight, the Rams fall to 6-11 overall, 0-5 in the Atlantic 10, while Dayton improves to 15-5 overall, 3-2 in the conference.
The Rams entered the game allowing opponents to connect on just over six three-pointers a game but the Flyers matched that in the first half alone as they took a 37-20 lead at the break before hitting seven more in the second stanza. The Rams finished with six threes, all coming in the final nine minutes of the game.
Dayton also controlled the boards tonight, outrebounding Fordham 56-38. The Flyers entered the game with the top rebounding margin in the Atlantic 10, averaging 5.5 more rebounds a game than their opponents.
The Flyers jumped out to a 5-0 lead 2:12 into the game and led 7-2 with 16:45 left in the first when the Rams used a 9-3 burst to take an 11-10 lead with 13:15 remaining, Fordham's only lead of the night. Chris Gaston scored the first eight Fordham points while Alberto Estwick gave the Rams the 11-10 lead with a three-point play.
After Dayton ran off seven straight points to go up 17-11 midway through the half, a Gaston jumper pulled Fordham to within four, 17-13, with 9:48 left in the period.
A Brenton Butler jumper a minute later made it a five-point game, 20-15, but Dayton netted nine straight to take a 14-point lead, 29-15, with 6:22 left in the half and the Flyers took the 17-point advantage at the break, 37-20.
The second half didn't start much better for the Rams as Dayton opened the half with a 6-1 run to take a 43-21 lead three minutes into the half and the closest the Rams would get from that point was 19, 44-25, on a pair of Gaston free throws with 16:16 left.
Gaston led the Rams with 16 points and he grabbed eight rebounds while Lamount Samuell added 13 points and seven rebounds and Frazier finished with eleven points.
The Rams will next be in action on Wednesday night, January 26th as they host the Duquesne University Dukes in an Atlantic 10 game in the Rose Hill Gym at 7:00 PM.
