A busy Saturday in Fordham sports action started at the Messmore Aquatic Center, where the Fordham swimming & diving teams split their dual meet with the La Salle Explorers. The Fordham women improved to 5-1 on the season with a 160-74 win, while the Fordham men fell to 2-3 with a 156-87 loss to the Explorers.
Overall, Fordham had three performers post two individual event wins, with each of them contributing to a winning relay team. Sophomore Brienne Ryan won the 50 freestyle in 24.19 seconds, as well as the 200 backstroke in a season-best time of 2:01.61, while junior Courtney Collyer took home the 200 individual medley in 2:09.20 and the 200 butterfly in 2:06.83.
Both Collyer and Ryan were also a part of the winning 400 medley relay team with Kelly Bunster and Kellie Lyver, as the group won in a season-best time of 3:52.81. In addition to the win, Ryan's starting split of 54.93 in the 100 backstroke portion of the relay was an NCAA "B" qualifying time.
Sophomore Thomas Yi was also a dual event winner, as he placed first in the 200 individual medley in 1:57.87 and first in the 200 backstroke in 1:55.11. Yi was also a part of the winning 400 freestyle relay with Shintaro Noguchi, John Kundrat, and Billy Colton, as they posted a time of 3:12.48.
Senior Megan McGorry was also a dual event winner, capturing both the 500 freestyle (5:04.18) and 1000 freestyle (10:17.00). Her time in the 1000 was a season-best time.
Other event winners on the afternoon included junior Alexandra Wessel in the 200 freestyle (1:56.29), Lyver in the 100 freestyle (54.33), Noguchi in the 200 freestyle (1:43.43 - season-best), junior Elizabeth Dorger in the one-meter dive (244.20), sophomore Brittany Salas in the three-meter dive (247.50), and the women's 400 freestyle relay team of Bunster, Alana Biagioli, Lara Moseley, and Wessel (3:37.47).
The Fordham swimming & diving teams will next be in action on Saturday, February 5th, when the Rams host the University of Massachusetts, beginning at 1:00 PM at the Messmore Aquatic Center.
