Bronx, N.Y. -
Fordham had faced George Washington 16 previous times and came away with a loss in every one of those games. On Saturday, in a game that had more plot twists than a Russian novel, it was the Rams who defeated the Colonials for the first time ever, 59-56. Junior guard, Becky Peters, scored a season-high and career-high 27 points just one day after her birthday, January 21.
The game also saw senior forward Tiffany Stokes record her second-straight double-double, posting 18 points and 10 rebounds to help end the Fordham two-game losing streak.
The game began in earnest for Peters, who scored the first seven points of the game for the Rams on a jumper, a three-pointer and another jumper. At the 14:55 mark, Kristina Bell gave the Rams a 10-9 lead with a three-pointer of her own. From there, Fordham never led again in the half as the Colonials built a 10 point cushion largely on the play of reserve guard Danni Jackson, who shot 5-of-7 for 12 points in the first-half.
The second half began with Fordham making some key adjustments, as the Rams tightened up the defense on Jackson; who shot just 1-of-8 in the second half. They then went to work to erase the 10 point deficit they faced. At 8:15 in the half, Stokes made a layup and drew the foul. She completed the three-point-play and the Rams were within seven, at 51-44.
Back-to-back three-pointers from Peters and Bell on the succeeding trips brought Fordham within one at 51-50 with 5:36 left. Brooke Wilson hit a basket for George Washington to extend the lead to three, but Peters subsequently knotted the score at 53-53 by hitting a three-pointer at 4:58. Jackson answered again on the next trip, and, like a heavyweight prize fight, Fordham countered as Stokes tied the game for the fourth time with a layup at 4:08.
The game remained within one point until the closing seconds when sophomore guard Arielle Collins beat the shot clock with a desperation jumper that went in. Fordham held on for the 59-56 win.
The win evened Fordham's record at 10-10 including a 2-2 mark in Atlantic 10 play. The Colonials are 5-13, 0-4 in conference play. The Rams next travel to St. Louis, Missouri to face fellow Jesuit school, St. Louis on January 25. The game time is 8:00 p.m Eastern.
