In an even match-up which saw ten shots aside, it only took one play to decide the Fordham-St. John's match-up at the Hofstra Invitational in Hempstead, N.Y. Unfortunately for the Rams, it came off the foot of St. John's Runa Stefansdottir, who scored the only goal in a 1-0 decision in favor of the Red Storm.
The loss was the first handed to Fordham this season, falling to 3-1-0, while St. John's improves to 2-2-1.
Fordham controlled the first part of the opening half, highlighted by shots from Katie McDermott and Danielle Ingram in the 7th and 11th minute, respectively, but St. John's goalkeeper Kristin Russell made the stop on both attempts.
Fordham's Annie Worden had the next prime opportunity, as off a cross, Worden slid a shot just by the right post in 20th minute.
St. John's followed with their first chance six minutes later on a Nicole Pasciolla shot, which rang off the crossbar and out of harm's way.
The Red Storm then broke the scoreless tie in the 39th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Francisca Okoko hit a long diagonal ball to Runa Stefansdottir for a breakaway down the left side, scoring her first goal of the season, inside the right post.
St. John's just missed making it 2-0 in the 56th minute on Jen Leaverton's shot, but the Red Storm were again denied by the crossbar, keeping it a one-goal game.
The Rams put together the next two opportunities, the first coming in the 62nd minute on an attempt by Mariella Romano, but her shot sailed just high over the bar. Then in the 68th minute, Romano put a corner kick into the box for a header by Kaitlyn Carballeira, but the ball was pushed right of the net.
Fordham had a final opportunity to tie the game in the final minute on a corner kick by Mary Solimine, but the cross was cleared away, as St. John's held on for the 1-0 decision.
For Fordham, Rachel Suther made two saves in the loss, while Russell made two saves in the shutout for St. John's
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, September 5th, when the Rams concludes play at the Hofstra Invitational with a 3:00 PM match-up with host Hofstra.
