Poughkeepsie, N.Y. -
Off a late scramble in the first overtime period, Fordham's Tim Richardson scored the game-winning goal with four seconds remaining to give the Rams a 1-0 win over the Marist Red Foxes at Tenney Stadium on Wednesday night.
With the win, Fordham has won three of its last four starts to even its record at 4-4-0, while Marist drops to 5-4-0. This was also Fordham's first overtime win of the season in three chances.
The scoreless draw was decided in the final seconds of the first ten minutes of overtime. Fordham received a late corner kick, taken by John McHugh. McHugh's cross found Julian Nagel for a shot, which was stopped by Marist keeper Joe Pilla. The rebound found Marcus Axelsson, who got the ball to Richardson for the game-winning goal at the 99:56 mark. It was Richardson's first goal of the season.
Axelsson had almost put the Rams on top near the end of regulation in the 86th minute. Off a McHugh corner kick, Axelsson headed the ball toward goal, but was knocked off the line by a Marist defender.
Fordham out shot Marist, 19-9, in the match. In net, Ryan Meara made four saves for Fordham, recording his second shutout of the season, while Pilla made six saves for the Red Foxes.
The Fordham men's soccer team will next be in action on Saturday, October 2nd, as it hosts the Manhattan College Jaspers on Jack Coffey Field, beginning at 7:00 PM.
