Volleyball Wins Conference Opener Against La Salle

Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham volleyball team got Homecoming Weekend at Rose Hill off to a fantastic start, defeating La Salle, 3-1, in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both schools. Final set scores were 25-22, 18-25, 25-21, and 25-15.

With the win, Fordham moves to 9-8 overall, 1-0 in the Atlantic 10, while La Salle falls to 4-12 on the year, 0-1 in the league.

Set one was all Fordham, as the Rams led wire-to-wire. Kailee May paced the offense with seven kills in the opening stanza, with Christi Griffiths and Katie Wells each having three.

La Salle bounced back in set two, as the Explorers led by as many as seven points to tie the match at one set apiece. La Salle hit .310 in that set, posting only three attack errors to Fordham's nine.

Set three went La Salle's way early, as the Explorers scored six straight points in the early goings to take a 9-5 lead. Fordham responded with a 7-1 stretch, highlighted by two kills from Brittany Daulton to take a 12-10 lead. Fordham extended the lead to five at 18-13 on a kill by Griffiths from which the Rams would cruise to a 25-21set win.

The fourth set was all Fordham, winning the stanza by 10 points, as the Rams hit .300 as a team. Daulton had seven kills and eight digs in that final set with Griffiths having five kills.

For Fordham, Daulton finished with game-highs of 15 kills and 15 digs with May having 13 kills and 11 digs. Griffiths posted 11 kills, three aces, and three blocks with Katie Wells adding 10 kills and three blocks. Sara Konkel and Mary Diamantidis split the setting duties, as each finished with 23 assists and seven digs.

The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Saturday, September 25th, when the Rams host Temple University at 7:00 PM in the Rose Hill Gymnasium.

Game Notes: The Rams extended their win streak over La Salle to 22 straight matches... With three blocks, Katie Wells reached 275 for her career, becoming the sixth Ram to reach that mark... Christi Griffiths moved into a tie for second in sets played at Fordham with 447. She trails only Stephanie Frost (2004-07) with 479 sets played.
