Boca Raton, Fla. -
The Fordham University women's soccer squad played a solid first 82 minutes of soccer at Florida Atlantic on Sunday afternoon. The problem was the next three minutes as the Owls scored two goals in a three minute span late in the game to pull out a 2-1 win over the Rams at the FAU Soccer Stadium.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 3-6 on the year while Florida Atlantic improves to 1-6.
The first half was evenly played with each team recording three shots with all three of the Fordham shots being on net but FAU keeper Courtney Zwetsch was up to the task, saving all three Fordham scoring chances.
The Owls had the first chance at a goal but Fordham keeper Rachel Suther was able to save a shot from Laura Hyvonen in the seventh minute. Five minutes later, Avilla Bergin got off a shot for the Rams that was saved by Zwetsch. The two other Fordham shots in the period were recorded by Katie McDermott and Cara Rooney.
Fordham broke the scoreless tie in the 57th minute when a Kelsey Dougherty Howard shot hit the post and the rebound came to Michelle Ancelj, who buried it in the back of the net for her team-leading fourth goal of the year.
The goal seemed to ignite the Fordham offense as the Rams controlled play for most the second half, outshooting the Owls, 8-3. But Fordham was called for a penalty in the box in the 82nd minute and Jesse Shugg converted it for the Owls, beating Suther to the left post, to tie the game at one. It was FAU's first shot of the second half.
FAU then stepped up the offense and freshman forward Brittney Nash netted the winning-goal in the 86th minute, with assists to Marisa Russo and Anhnhi Tran. Suther came out of net to defend Nash, who was streaking down the right sideline, but Nash found a gap and put a shot into the open net.
Suther finished with one save in the Fordham net while Zwetsch recorded eight for FAU.
The Rams will next be in action on Sunday, September 26th, as they host Army on Jack Coffey Field at 1:00 PM.
