Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham men's soccer team netted three goals for the first time in almost two years, as the Rams took down the Hofstra Pride by a 3-1 score at Jack Coffey Field.
The last time Fordham tallied at least three markers was November 9th, 2008 against Saint Joseph's, when the Rams scored four goals in that win, a span of 25 games. The win for Fordham today evens the team's record at 3-3-0, while Hofstra falls to 2-3-2.
The scoring started early in the 11th minute, as Fordham's John Niyonsaba found Tim Richardson eight yards in front of goal. Richardson's first two attempts were stopped by Hofstra goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone, but Richardson was able to push his third attempt over the line for his second goal of the season.
Just ten minutes later, Fordham made it 2-0 on a cross from Matt Courtenay to the left side of the box. Niyonsaba put a quick touch on it to Julian Nagel, who buried a shot into the net from 25 yards out for his first collegiate goal.
The score remained at 2-0 until the final minute of play, where Hofstra's Chris Griebsch scored his second goal of the season on a one-timer from 25 yards out inside the right post, cutting the Fordham lead to one.
The Rams however scored 16 seconds later to regain the two-goal advantage. Off the restart, Michael Caputo put a half volley pass toward the middle of the offensive zone, as the Hofstra goalkeeper came out to challenge the pass. The cross connected with Doug Hanly, who was able to knock it in from 30 yards away for his third goal of the season.
In net, Fordham's Ryan Meara made five saves for the win, while Hofstra split the goalkeeping duties between Greg Cumpstone and Adam Janowski, as each played a half.
The Fordham men's soccer team will next be in action on Saturday, September 25th, as the Rams take on Central Connecticut State in New Britain, Connecticut, beginning at 7:00 PM.
