Volleyball Can't Hold On In Columbia Invitational Opener

New York, N.Y. - Despite three Rams finishing with double-doubles, the Fordham volleyball team could not hold on to a 2-0 lead, falling in five sets to Columbia in the second match of the 2010 Columbia Invitational. Final set scores were 23-25, 20-25, 25-13, 25-18, and 15-12.

With the loss, Fordham falls to 6-7 overall, while Columbia improved to 5-2.

Set one saw Columbia get out 12-6, before Fordham responded with five straight points, capped by back-to-back aces from Brittany Daulton. The Lions came back with four points, following a timeout, and led late, 21-18. Daulton again got the Rams back in the set with back-to-back kills to cap four straight points and give Fordham a 22-21 lead. Fordham then finished the comeback at 25-23 on a Kailee May kill to take the opening set. Daulton ended up with seven kills and two aces to lead the Fordham offense.

In set two, Fordham opened up with a 9-6 lead, finished off by kills from Mary Diamantidis and May. The Rams extended that lead to five, 13-8, on another kill from May, and later to six, 15-9, on a service ace by Christi Griffiths. Fordham continued to lead by that margin at 21-15, as Griffiths, Jenna Hart, and Daulton connected for two straight blocks, and would go on to a 25-20 win. May paced the Rams with four kills and seven digs.

Columbia found their groove in set three, jumping out to a 10-4 edge, and later extending that lead to as many as nine at 17-8, and eventually taking the set, 25-13. The Lions were aided by 11 Fordham attack errors.

Set four saw the score at 11-10 in favor of Columbia, following a kill by Fordham's Griffiths, but the Lions reeled off seven of the next eight points to lead by an 18-11 count. The Lions would hold onto that lead to knot the match at two sets apiece.

In the final set, Fordham took the early edge at 3-1, highlighted by kills from Daulton and Griffiths. The Rams continued to lead on the change over, 8-6, on a kill by Griffiths. The Lions then grabbed their first lead at 10-9, but Fordham tied the score at 10 on a kill from Daulton. Columbia kept the offense going, as they took a 13-11 lead, and got match point at 14-12. Fordham's last chance to extend the match fell short on an attack error.

For Fordham, Daulton recorded a double-double with a career-high 17 kills and 14 digs, while May also had a double-double with 12 kills and 20 digs. Diamantidis finished with 35 assists, 13 digs and two aces, with Megan Arend having 14 digs and Griffiths adding eight kills, six blocks, and two aces.

The Rams will conclude play at the Columbia Invitational on Saturday, September 18th, when they take on Fairleigh Dickinson at 1:30 PM and Bucknell at 5:00 PM.
