Coral Gables, Fla. -
An early tally by Fordham's Katie McDermott was not quite enough on Friday night, as the Rams dropped a 3-1 decision to the Miami Hurricanes in Coral Gables, Fla.
With the loss, Fordham moves to 3-5-0, while Miami improves to 6-2-1.
The Rams got off to a great start at the 5:00 mark, as Katie McDermott scored her second goal in as many games on a header off a Michaela Murphy corner kick.
Fordham goalkeeper Rachel Suther kept Fordham ahead through the first 29 minutes with four saves early on, but the Hurricanes were able to get the equalizer in the 30th minute. Blake Stockton collected a pass off her chest, and fired a shot off the crossbar that landed over the line for her second goal of the year.
Just a minute and a half later, the Hurricanes went ahead by one, 2-1, on a header goal by Brittney Macdonald, her second of the year.
The score stayed that way until the 53rd minute, as Miami's Brittney Steinbruch's individual effort got around the Fordham defense and slid her fifth goal of the season into the net.
Fordham had two chances late in the game to pull closer to the Hurricanes, but goalkeeper Vikki Alonzo stopped a McDermott penalty kick in the 87th minute, and stopped a shot from Megan O'Conor in the 90th minute to seal the 3-1 win.
In net, Suther made nine saves, while Alonzo posted two saves.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, September 19th, when they play at Florida Atlantic at noon.
