Bronx, N.Y. -
Behind goals from Doug Hanly and Tim Richardson, the Fordham men's soccer team netted their second win of 2010 with a 2-1 victory over the Columbia Lions at Jack Coffey Field on Wednesday.
With the win, Fordham improves to 2-3-0, while Columbia moves to 1-3-1.
It took almost the full 45 minutes to find the first goal of the game, which came off the head of Fordham's Doug Hanly. Nathaniel Bekoe got the ball down to the right corner for a cross toward the goal line in the final minute. Hanly then used all of his 6-foot-5 frame to knock in a header past Columbia goalkeeper Alexander Aurrichio, as both went up for the ball near the goal line. It was Hanly's second goal of the season.
Fordham made it 2-0 at the 72:10 mark on a beautiful give and go effort between Tim Richardson and John Niyonsaba. Running down the left side toward goal, Richardson got the ball to Niyonsaba in the middle of the field, and then quickly got it back to Richardson. Richardson then easily scored his first goal of the season, as the goalkeeper could not get back to the goal after the second pass.
Columbia wouldn't give up, pulling within one at the 88:17 mark, as Bayo Adafin scored on a cross from David Najem. The Lions then had one final opportunity with mere seconds left on a shot by Francois Anderson, but his shot sailed high as time expired.
For Fordham, Ryan Meara posted four saves for his second win of the season, while Aurrichio had two saves for Columbia.
The Fordham men's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, September 19th, when the team hosts Hofstra at 4:00 PM on Jack Coffey Field.
