Bronx, N.Y. -
Long Island's Kayleigh Morgan scored in the 65th minute to break a 1-1 tie, as the Blackbirds downed the Fordham Rams, 2-1, in women's soccer action at Jack Coffey Field.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 3-4-0 overall, while LIU improved to 4-1-1.
The Blackbirds were on the attack throughout the game, outshooting Fordham, 15-5 in the match-up, including two chances off the foot of Ariana Calderon in the 30th minute. Calderon was stopped however on both occasions by Fordham defenders, as Mary Solimine made the defender save on the first shot with Lauren Nowakowski coming across for a second defender save, keeping the game scoreless.
The Blackbirds later cracked the scoreboard on Calderon's third attempt, scoring in the 41st minute off a cross from Brittany Schandelmayer, on a shot inside the left post.
The Rams then picked up the equalizer in the 44th minute, as an LIU player fouled Kelsey Dougherty Howard in box with the referee calling for the penalty kick. Fordham's Katie McDermott took the penalty kick and buried it into the left side of the net for her first goal of the season.
LIU then regained the lead in the second half off the foot of Morgan, as she blasted a shot toward goal that got through the hands of Fordham goalkeeper Sarah Zieman and over the line for a 2-1 lead.
Fordham could not find the equalizer this time, as the Rams managed only one shot in the second half.
Zieman finished the match with three saves for the Rams, while Jessica Sexton had one save in net for the Blackbirds.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Friday, September 17th, when they travel to Coral Gables, Florida to meet the Miami Hurricanes at 7:00 PM.
