Back in action this weekend at the Princeton Invitational, the Fordham water polo team had their hands full on day one, facing #18 Princeton and #13 Santa Clara. The Rams opened the day with a loss to the Tigers, but forced overtime with 13th-ranked Santa Clara in the nightcap.
In the opening match, the Rams fell to 18th ranked Princeton by a 9-5 count, as the Tigers got out to an early 5-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and didn't look back.
For Fordham, Ali Arat had a pair of Fordham tallies, while Martin de Jong, Andrew McKernin, and Mikey Edwards each had one goal. Victor Bautista Medina had three steals defensively for the Rams with Christian Flessner making seven stops in goal.
In match two, Fordham gave 13th-ranked Santa Clara all they could handle as the match went into overtime, tied at nine. Santa Clara however took advantage of Fordham's short bench, following a couple of foul outs, as the Broncos scored four times in overtime for a 13-9 decision.
For Fordham, Arat and Edwards each had a pair of goals, while Ricky Dilday, Ryan Hultman, McKernin, Daniel Muñoz, and Ben Clinkinbeard also scored for the Rams. Defensively, Hultman recorded a career-high six steals in the match, while Flessner made ten saves in goal.
Fordham is now 2-5 on the year heading into two more matches on Sunday, as they play George Washington and John Hopkins. Both are rematches from the water polo team's first weekend of games.
