Manhattan, N.Y. -
The Fordham University women's soccer team made its shortest road trip of the year on Friday night and, despite outshooting Columbia, couldn't find the back of the net as the Rams fell to the Lions 2-0 at Columbia Soccer Stadium.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 3-3-0 while Columbia improves to 3-1-0.
Fordham got off 15 shots in the match, putting seven of those on the Columbia goal, but Lion keeper Lillian Klein was up to the task, stopping all seven.
Columbia got on the board early when Kelly Hostetler sent a corner into the box where Chelsea Ryan headed it to Beverly Leon who beat Fordham keeper Rachel Suther for her first goal of the year in the fifth minute.
Just over a minute later, Fordham's Annie Worden blasted a shot, forcing Klein to make her first save of the game and, five minutes later, Katie McDermott got off a shot from 25 yards that was denied by Klein.
The Lions almost took a 2-0 lead in the ninth minute but Suther was able to punch out a Hostetler free kick from 18 yards.
Early in the second half the Rams almost found the equalizer as Danielle Ingram got off a blast from about 25 yards but Klein came up with a diving stop.
The score would remain 1-0 until the 64th minute when Leon fed Ashlin Yahr in for a semi-breakaway with Yahr slipping the ball past Suther for her second goal of the year.
The Rams put the pressure on the Lions over the last 15 minutes of the game, forcing Klein to make three saves, but Fordham couldn't push the ball across the line.
Suther finished with four saves in the first 66 minutes for Fordham while Sarah Zieman played the final 24.
The Rams will next be in action on Sunday, September 12th, as they host Long Island University on Jack Coffey Field at 1:00 PM.
