Day One of the 10th Annual Rose Hill Classic in the Books

Bronx, N.Y. - The 10th Annual Rose Hill Classic saw five matches played on Friday, and it's Syracuse who leads the pack after two victories on day one. Fordham, Stony Brook, and Harvard are all 1-1 after day one, with Rider at 0-2. Tournament Central Page

Match 1 - Stony Brook 3, Rider 0

The 2010 Rose Hill Classic kicked off with Stony Brook earning a 3-0 victory over Rider. Final sets scores were 25-20, 25-17, and 25-15.

Stony Brook improved to 2-6 overall, while Rider dropped to 1-5.

Stony Brook hit a whopping .342 in the match, led by Alicia Nelson, who finished the match with 13 kills and a .360 hitting percentage. Greta Strenger also had a solid match for the Seawolves, posting eight kills and six digs.

For Rider, Katelyn Thompson was the top offensive force with nine kills, while Stephanie Nagy had six kills in just seven attempts.

Match 2 - Fordham 3, Harvard 0

The second match day was a milestone match for one Fordham Ram, as Kailee May recorded her 1,000th career kill and 1,000th career dig, leading Fordham to a three-set victory over the Harvard Crimson. Final set scores were 25-22, 29-27, and 25-23.

With the win, Fordham improved to 5-3 overall, while Harvard dropped to 1-3.

The match boiled down to May's performance, which halted Harvard's momentum at each turn. She posted a match-high 19 kills to go with 12 digs, giving her 1,007 career kills and 1,003 career digs. She joined Cindy Vojtech (1996-99) and Tasha Johnston (2003-06) as the only three Rams to reach the 1,000-1,000 milestone. Overall, May is the eighth Ram to reach 1,000 career kills, and only the fourth to get to 1,000 digs.

The Rams also received solid efforts from their freshmen duo of Sara Konkel and Maria Rodenberg. Rodenberg tied her season-high with 19 digs, with Konkel having a double-double with 37 assists and 10 digs.

For Harvard, Taylor Docter had 12 kills and five digs, with Christine Wu having 19 digs.

The 19 digs for both Rodenberg and Wu set a new Rose Hill Classic record for a three-set match.

Match 3 - Syracuse 3, Stony Brook 0

The third match on Friday saw a dominate effort by the Syracuse Orange, as they improved to 9-0 on the season with a straight sets win over Stony Brook. Final set scores were 25-20, 25-14, and 25-19.

The loss puts Stony Brook at 2-7 overall and 1-1 in the tournament.

Stony Brook could not match the Syracuse offense, as they hit .412 as a team in the match, which included five players hitting .391 or better.

Syracuse's Hayley Todd led the way with 13 kills and four blocks, while Noemie Lefebvre and Lindsay McCabe each had 10 kills and two blocks.

Stony Brook was led by Ashley Headen's eight kills, two blocks, and .538 hitting percentage.

Match 4 - Harvard 3, Rider 1

Harvard bounced back from their loss earlier in the day to Fordham, posting a 3-1 win over the Rider Broncs in match four of the Rose Hill Classic. Final set scores were 25-18, 21-25, 25-18, and 25-18.

With the win, Harvard improved to 2-3 overall, 1-1 in the tournament, while Rider dropped to 1-6 on the season, 0-2 in the tournament.

Harvard's duo of Taylor Docter and Sandra Fryhofer did the majority of the damage with 11 kills apiece with Docter also adding 12 digs for a double-double. Christine Wu and Olivia Staffon each had 14 digs defensively.

For Rider, Katelyn Thompson recorded a double-double with a match-high 16 kills to go with 10 digs and three aces, while Megan Knott had 10 kills. Elyse Grassmuck picked up 20 digs defensively and also added an ace.

Match 5 - Syracuse 3, Fordham 0

Day one of the Rose Hill Classic wrapped up with Syracuse topping host Fordham in three sets. Final set scores were 25-15, 25-11 and 25-20.

The win improved Syracuse's record to 10-0 overall, 2-0 in the tournament, while Fordham fell to 5-4 on the year, 1-1 in the tournament.

Syracuse was on target offensively with a .444 team hitting percentage, as the Orange committed only four errors in the match. The group was paced by the 12 kills and five digs from Noemie Lefebvre, with Samantha Hinz recording nine kills and two aces. Lindsay McCabe also added eight kills in ten attempts.

For Fordham, Katie Wells led the way with nine kills and a .538 hitting percentage, as she inched closer to her career milestone with 995 career kills. Kailee May added eight kills with Sara Friede posting eight digs defensively. Lisa Hipp also saw her first action as a Ram, recording four kills in eight attempts.

Play at the 10th Annual Rose Hill Classic concludes on Saturday, September 11th with five more matches on the schedule. The day begins at 9:00 AM with Rider against Syracuse, followed by Harvard and Stony Brook at 11:30 AM. Fordham then enters the fray with a 2:00 PM match-up with Rider with Syracuse and Harvard set for a 4:30 PM start. The day concludes with Fordham taking on Stony Brook at 7:00 PM.
