Bronx, N.Y. -
The Fordham men's soccer team opened their 2010 season in front a strong crowd at Jack Coffey Field, and out shot the Adelphi Panthers, 14-9, and had a number of good scoring chances. However, the Panthers' Sam Vanaria netted the only goal of the game at the 106:51 mark of overtime, as Adelphi knocked off Fordham, 1-0, on Wednesday night.
The teams played scoreless through the first half with each having strong scoring chances. The first chance was a header by Fordham's Tim Richardson (Palmerston North, New Zealand) that went wide of the left goal post in the 21st minute. Adelphi, which had six corner kicks in the first half, picked up its first true scoring opportunity off the foot of Issa Tall, but his bender shot went wide of the right post in the 24th minute.
Each goalkeeper was then tested late in the half. Adelphi's Michael Aquino put a header on net, which Fordham's Ryan Meara made a diving stop on in the 42nd minute.
Right after that fray, Fordham went the other way with two prime chances. The first was a shot by John Niyonsaba, which was stopped by Adelphi goalkeeper Thorne Holder in the 43rd minute, while Fordham's Doug Hanly was able to get header over Holder in the 44th minute, but Adelphi defender Dan Larenius cleared the ball just before it crossed the line.
The second half was more of the same, as neither team allowed many opportunities near the net.
It wasn't until the second ten-minute frame of overtime that the game was decided. Adelphi's Brandon Stoneham picked up the ball off a deflection and drove the left side of the box, connected a cross to Sam Vanaria, who was able to knock the ball past Meara for the game-winning goal, his first of the year.
In net, Meara made two saves for the Rams, while Holder had three saves in the shutout.
The Fordham men's soccer team will next be in action on Saturday, September 4th, when they play at Lehigh University, beginning at 7:00 PM.
