Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Behind All-Tournament performances from Christi Griffiths and Sara Konkel, the Fordham volleyball team improved to 4-0 for the first time in team history on Saturday, defeating both Holy Cross and Quinnipiac, to capture the 2010 Beanpot Classic title. The Rams opened the day with a three set-win over Holy Cross, and concluded the tournament with a four-set victory over Quinnipiac.
Behind near double-doubles by Brittany Daulton and Kailee May, the Fordham volleyball team improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2001, as they topped Holy Cross (2-2) in three sets on day two of the Beanpot Classic in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Final sets scores were 25-18, 25-21, and 25-20.
Fordham took charge right away in the first set, hitting .379 as a group with Jenna Hart and Kailee May each having five kills.
Set two was closer with Holy Cross tying the score at 14 on a service ace by Kathleen Colpoys. Fordham responded with kills by May, Daulton, and Katie Wells to go with a block error, regaining the lead at 18-14. The Crusaders fought back within one, 21-20, but committed three errors over the final five points, allowing Fordham to win the set, 25-21.
Set three was again all Fordham, as the Rams jetted out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back, leading by as many as 13 points in the clinching set.
For Fordham, May recorded a match-high 11 kills to go with a .526 hitting percentage, while Daulton hit .545 with eight kills and nine digs. Christi Griffiths added eight kills and five blocks with Hart having six kills and four blocks. Sara Konkel dished out 37 assists to go with seven digs for the Rams with Emily Atwood having a match-best 10 digs defensively.
In its final match of the tournament, Fordham topped Quinnipiac (0-2) in four sets to win the Beanpot Classic, and begin their season at 4-0 for the first time in program history. Final set scores were 25-23, 16-25, 27-25, 25-19.
Despite a .310 hitting percentage by Quinnipiac in the match, the Bobcats fell victim to their own errors, in particular, 23 service errors, compared to just six by Fordham.
The opening set saw ten tied scores, the last coming at 21 all. Fordham grabbed a two-point edge, 23-21, on kills by Hart and
Sara Friede, and later took the set by two, following another kill by Friede and a service error by Quinnipiac.
Quinnipiac evened the match at one set apiece with a 25-16 win in set two. The Bobcats hit .478 as a team, led by Taylor Payne's four kills.
Set three was a seesaw affair with 18 tie scores and eight lead changes. Quinnipiac had a pair of set points at 24-23 and 25-24, but both were negated by Fordham. The Rams then collected kills from Konkel and Daulton to capture the third set, 27-25.
In the fourth set with the score at 11-10 in favor of Fordham, the Rams took control with a five-point surge, highlighted by three kills and a block by Griffiths. Fordham led by as many as six, cruising to a 25-19 set win, and taking the match in four.
For Fordham, Griffiths finished with a team-high 11 kills to go with five blocks, earning tournament MVP honors. In the tournament, she hit .485 with 38 kills, five service aces, 12 digs, and 14 total blocks. Daulton and Wells each added eight kills for the Rams, while Konkel (22 assists, 5 digs) and Mary Diamantidis (11 assists) shared the setting duties.
In addition to Griffiths, Konkel was also named to the All-Tournament team, as she averaged 10.1 assists and 2.21 digs per set (142 assists, 31 digs) to go with five kills, three blocks and an ace.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Friday, September 3rd, when they start play at the Maryland Invitational. Fordham will meet host Maryland on Friday at 7:30 PM, and then take on Georgetown and Bradley on Saturday at 10:30 AM and 4:30 PM, respectively.
