Volleyball Begins 2010 With Wins Over Northeastern & Boston College at Beanpot Classic

Worcester, Mass. - Beginning their 2010 season on Friday, the Fordham volleyball team won their opening two matches for the first time since 2007, downing Northeastern in five sets and Boston College in three on day one of the Beanpot Classic in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Fordham started the tournament with a season-opening win for the fourth straight season, defeating Northeastern in five sets, behind Brittany Daulton's first career double-double. Final set scores were 25-22, 25-20, 24-26, 25-27, and 15-12.

The Rams out hit Northeastern by a .205 to .163 count, taking advantage of Huskie attack errors. In the opening set, Northeastern committed 11 attack errors, as Fordham took the opening round, 25-22. The Rams' Jenna Hart led the offense with four kills in the opening set.

In set two, Fordham led for the most part, capitalizing on a 13-3 run midway through the set, taking it by a 25-20 count. During that run, Katie Wells knocked down four kills for Fordham, while Kailee May also had four kills in the set.

Northeastern then stormed back in sets three and four, winning both by two. Set three saw ten tie scores with Fordham coming back to knot the set at 24 on a block by Wells. The Huskies however got kills from Jillian Robinson and Britney Brown to close out the set, 26-24.

In set four, Fordham had two match points at 24-22, following a kill by Wells. Northeastern fought back with three straight kills from Brown, eventually forcing a fifth set with a 27-25 score.

In the final set, Northeastern led by a 12-10 count, but Fordham rallied for five consecutive points to take the match, four of which came on Northeastern attack errors.

Jenna Hart totaled 20 kills on day one of the Beanpot Classic.


For Fordham, Brittany Daulton had her first career double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs, both career-highs, while Hart and Wells each had a team-high 14 kills. Griffiths added 11 kills with a .562 hitting percentage, which is the second-highest hitting percentage in a five-set match in Fordham history.

Making their collegiate debuts for Fordham, Sara Konkel had her first double-double with 51 assists and 14 digs, while Emily Atwood had 13 digs.

In match two, Fordham dispatched Boston College in three sets. Final set scores were 25-22, 25-22, and 25-13.

After winning the first set, Fordham fell behind in set two to Boston College by a 12-8 score. The Rams rallied to tie the score at 16 on a kill by Daulton, and then took a brief lead at 19-17. The Eagles responded with five of the next six points to lead, 22-20. Undeterred, Fordham came right back with the next five points to win the second set, 25-22, highlighted by kills by Griffiths and Hart.

Set three was all Fordham, as the Rams opened with a 9-1 lead and never looked back, winning by a 25-13 count.

For Fordham, Daulton had eight kills and 10 digs, while Wells and Griffiths each had eight kills. Hart and May tallied six kills apiece with Konkel dishing out 32 assists and five digs. Defensively, Atwood had a match-high 14 digs.

The Fordham volleyball team will wrap up play at the Beanpot Classic on Saturday, August 28th, as the tournament shifts to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. The Rams open with Holy Cross at 10:30 AM, followed by a match with Quinnipiac at 2:30 PM.
