BRONX, N.Y. - The Fordham softball team swept the St. Bonaventure Bonnies, 4-2 in the first game and 9-0 in six innings in game two, to finish the season 45-8 overall and 16-2 in Atlantic 10 play, securing a first round bye as the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championships this Wednesday. With the sweep, the Rams completes the regular season on a 19-game win streak, the third longest win streak of any team in Division I this season.
The Sunday doubleheader was also Senior Day at Bahoshy as the Rams celebrated the career accomplishments of their lone senior and captain, Erin Fisher (Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville). Fisher was 1-for-6 on the day with an RBI-double in the first game.
Junior thirdbaseman Jocelyn Dearborn (New Milford, Pa./Blue Ridge) hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning in game two for her 37th RBI and 11th home run of the season. Dearborn sent in four runs in the doubleheader and was 2-for-7. Rookie Jamie LaBovick (Peroria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) had four RBI, including a game-ending double in the sixth inning to score three runners. In the second game, Fordham scored five of their nine runs with two outs on the scoreboard.
Sophomore Jen Mineau (Schaghticoke, N.Y./Hoosic Valley Central) and junior Chelsea Plimpton (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville South) split time in the circle, with Mineau earning the win in game one and Plimpton in the second. Mineau struck out 16, her 24th double-digit strikeout performance of the season, for a total of 436. The sophomore's record is 30-5 for the season. Plimpton struck out eight batters in the second set of the doubleheader as she advanced her season record to 11-2.
Sophomore Lindsey Kay Bright (Federal Way, Wash./Decatur) was 3-for-4 against St. Bonaventure with two runs and two RBI. Classmate Nicole Callahan (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.
With the losses, St. Bonaventure ends the season 13-27 overall and 7-11 in the Atlantic 10.
Fordham 4, St. Bonaventure 2
The Rams had one run score in the first inning as Fisher hit an RBI double to left field that dropped just in front of the diving Bonnie leftfielder. Dearborn scored on the hit as she led off the inning on first base after a St. Bonaventure error.
In the second inning, errors got the best of St. Bonaventure again. Callahan led off the inning getting on base on an error. Sophomore Jessica Richards (Trabuco Canyon, Calif./Mission Viejo) followed with a single to right center and advanced to second on the throw and Callahan moved to third. Dearborn hit a sac fly to center to score Callahan, unearned. Richards scored the third run of the game on a wild pitch that bounced right in the dirt in front of home plate, also unearned.
With Fordham leading 3-0 in the third inning, Mineau struck out the side to quickly have the Rams back up at the plate.
Helping out their pitcher, the Rams scored one more run in the third. Junior catcher Meghan Shager (Conklin, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) rallied with a two-out single to the St. Bonaventure shortstop. The junior moved to second on a passed ball, ready to score as Callahan hit a single to center field on a 3-0 pitch. Shager's run was the last one Fordham would score in the game.
In the sixth inning, the Bonnies broke up Mineau's shutout and the no-hitter as lead off batter Jessenia Andujar hit a home run over the center field fence. Mineau took it out on the final batter as she went down swinging.
With no runs scored for Fordham in the bottom of the sixth, Mineau struck out two of the last three batters to save the two-run Fordham lead. Fisher took the middle batter out catching a high fly ball to center field.
Fordham 9, St. Bonaventure 0 (6 innings) Fordham scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the second inning as a trio of sophomores got the Rams on the scoreboard early Bright hit a single to center field scoring Callahan and Richards.With two away and Callahan on first after being hit by a pitch, Richards hit a single to left field. Callahan made the look and ran around the bases to third, Richards paused and saw the chance to grab second base as the St. Bonaventure centerfielder tried to make the play at third. Both were ready to score as Bright got up to the plate and hit her two-RBI single.
In the third inning, LaBovick led off with a homer way over the centerfield fence giving the Rams a three run lead.
In the fourth inning, Dearborn sent a home run into right field with a three-RBI rip that flew with the wind and was tipped over the fence by the glove of the Bonnies' rightfielder. Dearborn's hit sent in Bright and
Jessica Crowley (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern), who came in to pinch run for Callahan. Callahan led off the inning with a single to left center. After two straight outs for the Fordham batters, Bright single just inside the left field foul line as Crowley made her way to second base. Bright and Crowley were on the bases and ready for Dearborn as she hit the first pitch over the fence. LaBovick grounded out to the St. Bonaventure short stop to end the inning, but the damage had been done and Fordham took a six-run lead.
Neither the Rams or Bonnies scored in the next two batting frames, although St. Bonaventure got two on in the top of the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Richards reached first on an error. Bright walked and Dearborn reached by fielder's choice to load the bases for Fordham. LaBovick hit a long walk-off double on the 1-2 pitch, sending all three batters home for the 9-0 Fordham victory.
With a first round bye in the Atlantic 10 Championships, the No. 2 Fordham Rams will play their first game on Thursday, May 13 at 2 p.m. Fordham will play the winner of the second game on Wednesday, between No. 3 Charlotte and No. 6 Rhode Island.
Since tournament play ended on March 21, Fordham is 26-2. With a 19-game win streak, Fordham is one of two teams in Division I to have a 15-game streak alive. Alabama is currently on a 20-game winning streak after sweeping Mississippi this weekend for the SEC Regular Season title.
