Arlington, Va. - The Fordham baseball team had a very good opportunity for their first series sweep of the season on Sunday against George Washington, which would easily put Fordham in the driver seat for an Atlantic 10 playoff spot with one weekend remaining. Unfortunately, four errors in the first three innings put Fordham in a hole they could not recover from, dropping the series finale to the Colonials by a 12-5 count in Arlington, Va.

Fordham now sits at 13-11 in the Atlantic 10, which is good for a tie for fourth with George Washington, La Salle, and Saint Joseph's. Dayton and Saint Louis are also still in the mix at 12-12. Overall, Fordham is now 19-32, while George Washington is 25-26.

For the third straight game, Fordham scored first with a pair of runs in the opening inning. Chris Walker and Ryan McCrann opened the rally with back-to-back two-out singles. Angelo Ponte and Mike Mobbs followed with consecutive RBI-singles, giving Fordham a 2-0 lead.

The Colonials responded with seven unanswered runs, scoring three times in the first, twice in the second, and twice in the third, as George Washington took advantage of four Fordham errors in that span to grab a 7-2 lead.

Fordham registered two runs in the top of the fourth, pulling within 7-4, as the Rams loaded the bases with no outs. P.J. Como opened with a single and moved to second on a walk to Ryan Maghini. Ryan Lee then reached on an infield single to load the bases. George Washington starter Brian Derner then got a little help with a ground ball double play, which scored Como and moved Maghini to third. Walker then plated Maghini with a single up the middle.

The Colonials came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning and tacked on another run in the fifth for a 10-4 lead.

The Rams closed within 10-5 on a solo home run by McCrann, his fifth of the season, but the Colonials added two more runs in the seventh on a two-run home run by Chris Luick, going on to the 12-5 win.

John Flanagan (0-5) took the loss, allowing three earned runs out of seven in total on eight hits and three walks in 2.2 innings. Rich Anastasi came on in relief of Flanagan, pitching 3.1 innings, giving up three runs on four hits, while Joseph Charest closed out the final two innings, allowing two runs on four hits.

At the plate, McCrann was 4-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored, while Walker and Ponte were both 2-for-5 with an RBI.

The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Tuesday, May 18th, when they play the final non-conference game of the season at Seton Hall, beginning at 6:00 PM.
