Behind an incredible 10-inning complete game effort by Fordham's Max Krakowiak and a two-run triple by Nick Martinez in the top of the tenth inning, as the Rams defeated the Dayton Flyers, 5-3, at Time Warner Cable Stadium in Dayton, Ohio.
With the win, Fordham moves to 14-24 overall, 8-6 in the Atlantic 10, while Dayton goes to 17-23 overall, 6-8 in the league.
Fordham opened the scoring in the second inning, as Mike Mobbs led off with a walk, and stole second. Nick Martinez then dueled with Dayton starter Cameron Hobson for a ten-pitch at bat, finally connecting for a single through the right side to score Mobbs from second.
The Rams extended the lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs, using some team speed to manufacture both runs. P.J. Como led off the frame with a double to right, and then Ryan Maghini was able to beat out a bunt single, putting runners at first and third. Maghini moved to second on a wild pitch, which was followed by Brian Kownacki singling over the Dayton shortstop's head to score Como. Chris Walker then pulled off a beautiful two-strike hit through the right side, to score Maghini from third base.
Fordham's Max Krakowiak kept the Dayton bats quiet through six innings, but the Flyers got to him for three runs in the bottom of the seventh. With runners at first and second with one out, Cole Tyrell connected for a double to center, scoring Zach Jacob and Aaron Dunsmore, but Mobbs kicked the ball away, allowing Tyrell to go to third. Tyrell later tied the game, scoring on a Krakowiak wild pitch.
Fordham had a big opportunity to retake the lead in the top of the eighth, as Mobbs reached on an infield single and went to third on a single by Angelo Ponte. The Flyers' relief pitcher Chris Beesley however kept Fordham off the scoreboard, getting two ground balls and a strikeout to get three outs.
Dayton then had their chance to possible take a lead with one on and one out in the bottom of the eighth, but Kownacki, Martinez, and Ryan McCrann turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.
Fordham broke the 3-3 tie in the top of the tenth inning, scoring twice on a two-run triple by Martinez. McCrann started the rally with an infield single, while Mobbs was hit by a pitch. After a strikeout, Martinez had his third long at bat of the afternoon, capped by a two-run triple to right center, scoring McCrann and Mobbs.
Krakowiak made that two-run lead hold up, getting a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the tenth, finishing off his third compete game of the season. In all, Krakowiak allowed two earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts, improving to 3-3 on the season.
At the plate, Martinez was 3-for-5 with a triple and three RBI, while McCrann and Maghini each had a pair of hits. McCrann also had a pair of stolen bases, as did Como.
The two teams with meet for the rubber game of this series on Sunday at 11:00 AM, which is different than the original schedule, which had the game at noon. The game was moved due to possible weather moving through the Dayton area.
