Box Score
Dayton, Ohio -
Dayton's Zach Blanchette hit a two-run home run and scored three runs, while Zach Jacob was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three RBI, as the Flyers took the series opener from the Fordham Rams, 11-0, at Time Warner Cable Stadium in Dayton, Ohio.
With the loss, Fordham is now 13-24 on the season, 7-6 in Atlantic 10, while Dayton goes to 17-22 overall, 6-7 in the league.
Fordham had a golden opportunity in the top of the first inning, loading the bases on two singles and a walk. Dayton starter Bruny Mitchem then got a pair of outs on a pop up and a strikeout, bringing Angelo Ponte to the plate. The Rams thought they got a run on the second offering to Ponte, a curveball that hit his shoulder, but the home plate umpire ruled that Ponte leaned into the pitch, keeping him at the plate. After working a full count, Mitchem got Ponte to ground out to first to end the threat.
Dayton followed by capitalizing on an error to score the game's first run. Zach Blanchette opened the inning with a ground ball to third base. Ryan Maghini mishandled the ball, allowing Blanchette to reach first on an error. Blanchette then stole second and moved to third on a ground out. Zach Jacob then lined a single back up the box to score Blanchette.
Dayton added to that lead in the second, scoring four times for a 5-0 lead, highlighted by a two-run home run by Blanchette, his first of the year.
The Flyers tacked on another run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Jimmy Roesinger, making it a 6-0 score.
Dayton continued to rack up the offense with two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and one in the seventh, extending their lead to 11-0, which was plenty for the Dayton pitching staff as four pitchers combined for a four-hit shutout of the Rams.
Fordham's J.P. Mack (1-5) was credited with the loss, allowing seven earned runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings, while Dayton's Mitchem (4-6) recorded the win, allowing three hits and three walks in six innings of work.
At the plate, Nick Martinez was 1-for-4 with a double, while Brian Kownacki was 1-for-3 with a stolen base.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday with first pitch slated for 1:00 PM.
