The baseball game between Fordham and St. John's was delayed by over an hour by a stormed that passed through Queens. And once the game began, it was delayed by runners crossing the plate as the two teams combined for 25 runs. Unfortunately for the Rams, it was the Red Storm who crossed the plate more, upending the Rams 18-7, in a game played at Kaiser Stadium.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 13-23 while St. John's improves to 22-12.
The Rams jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as with one out, Brian Kownacki and Chris Walker hit back-to-back singles and Ryan McCrann was hit by apitch to load the bases. One out later, Angelo Pontesingled to center to deliver
Kownacki and Walker and put the Rams up 2-0.
The Red Storm came back with six in the home half of the first off Fordham starter Ryan DeMartino. Scott Ferrara and Jimmy Parque opened the inning getting hit by pitches and Joe Panik followed with a single to load the bases. A Jeremy Baltz sacrifice fly plated one run and, one out later, Sean O'Hare walked to reload the bases. Matt Wessinger singled to deliver Panik and Parque to give St. John's a 3-2 lead and Robert Case followed with a double to plate Wessinger and O'Hare. A Pat Talbut single then brought in Case to make it a 6-2 game.
St. John's extended the lead to 8-2 with a pair of runs in the second on a Greg Hopkins RBI ground out and an O'Hare RBI double.
Fordham fought back to make it an 8-7 game with five runs in the third. With one out, McCrann reached on a bunt single and Mike Mobbs doubled to put runners on second and third. Ponte then delivered both runners with a single to left and a walk to P.J. Como and a Nick Martinez infield single loaded the bases for Ryan Maghini who walked to force in Ponte. Ryan Lee followed with a single to deliver Mobbs and Martinez and cut the Fordham deficit to one, 8-7.
But the Red Storm scored four times in the fourth, highlight by RBI singles from Baltz and Wessinger, and then picked up three more in the fifth on a Panik three-run home run to take a commanding 15-7 lead.
St. John's closed out the night's scoring with three runs in the sixth, keyed by a two-run single from Hopkins.
Ponte finished the game 2-for-5 with four RBI for the Rams while Lee and McCrann also collected a pair of hits each with Lee adding two RBI.
The Rams will next be in action on Friday, April 23rd, as they travel to Dayton, Ohio, to open a three-game Atlantic 10 series with the Dayton Flyers at 3:00 p.m.
