| 04/18/10 - Highlights vs. Saint Louis
Bronx, N.Y. -
Looking to sweep their weekend series against Saint Louis, Fordham continued to find the two-out hit magic, leading 2-0 threw five innings on Sunday at Houlihan Park. The magic however wouldn't last as the Billikens tied the game at two and then scored seven times in the ninth inning to take the series finale by a 9-2 score.
With the loss, Fordham drops back to 12-22 overall, 7-5 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Louis is 19-18 on the year, 7-5 in league play.
Fordham opened the scoring with a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth, rallying with two outs. Ryan McCrann singled to center with Chris Walker then hitting a sky high fly ball that landed in between a couple of Billiken fielders down the left field line for an RBI-double. Mike Mobbs then looped a hit into centerfield just out of reach of the Saint Louis second baseman to score Walker.
The Billikens cut the lead in half in the top of the sixth, as Jon Myers led off with a double and scored on a single through the right side by Jerry Mancuso.
Saint Louis then tied the game in the top of the seventh, as with one out, J.D. Dunn hit a liner into left field. Fordham's Ryan Lee tried for the diving catch but came up short, allowing the ball to go all the way to the wall for a triple. Danny Brock then plated Dunn with a sacrifice fly.
The score remained tied at two until the ninth, when Saint Louis sent 12 batters to the plate, scoring seven times for a 9-2 lead. After Fordham reliever
Joseph Charest got the first out, he walked Cody Cotter and Dunn, which brought
Daniel Munday out of the Fordham bullpen. Brock then hit a comebacker to Munday, who tried for the double play at second, but threw low to
Brian Kownacki, allowing Cotter to score with Dunn taking third. Myers then hit a shot to third, which took a hop over
Ryan Maghini, plating Dunn.
The Billikens got a pair of two-run singles later in the frame by Connor Gandossy and Cotter off reliever Rich Anastasi, which ended up sealing a 9-2 win for Saint Louis.
Charest (0-1) took the loss for Fordham, allowing two earned runs on three hits with two walks in 3.1 innings. Munday and Anastasi ended up with five runs allowed, all unearned, in just a third of an inning. Starter Brian Pendergast went the first five innings, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts.
At the plate, Walker was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, while McCrann, Mobbs, and Angelo Ponte each had a pair of hits.
The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Tuesday, April 20th, when they host the Iona College Gaels at Houlihan Park, beginning at 7:00 PM.
