WASHINGTON, D.C. -
The Fordham softball team completed its sweep of the George Washington softball team and extended their winning streak to eight games with a 9-0, five-inning victory on Saturday afternoon at the Mount Vernon Softball Complex.
Junior transfer Chelsea Plimpton (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville South (St. John's)) tallied her third complete game shut out of the season and got her season ERA under 2.00, with a two-hitter against the Colonials. Plimpton struck out six GW batters en route to her eighth victory (8-2).
With the win, the Rams advance to 34-8 overall and 8-2 in Atlantic 10 action. The Colonials fall to 5-28 on the season and 2-10 in the league.
Fordham scored at least one run in each of the five innings of play, as sophomore Jessica Richards (Trabuco Canyon, Calif./Mission Viejo) went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Junior Jocelyn Dearborn (New Milford, Pa./Blue Ridge) went 3-for-4, scoring four runs and knocking in three. Dearborn reached the bases on every at bat.
Junior Beckah Wiggins (Conklin, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) also recorded three RBI as she went 2-for-4. Senior Erin Fisher (Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville) continued on her eight-game hit streak, also went 2-for-4 and sent in two RBI.
Dearborn led off the game with a single up the middle. Wiggins, batting third knocked in Dearborn as she reached first base on an error.
In the second inning, the Rams added two more runs to their tally as Richards hit a single to left field, then scored on Dearborn's double to centerfield. Fisher's single on the next at bat scored Dearborn and Fordham took a 3-0 through two innings.
In the third inning, rookie Jamie LaBovick (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) singled to right field to lead off for the Rams. With two outs on the board, Richards had an RBI-single to score LaBovick from third base.
Dearborn led off again in the fourth inning and reached on an error by the leftfielder, advancing to second on the mistake. Fisher made short work of Dearborn being on base and she knocked her in with a double. Wiggins continued the trend and hit a single up the middle to score Fisher. With Fordham up 6-0, only two runs were needed in the fifth for the win.
In the fifth, the Rams got two runs plus a bonus run for the victory. Fordham had a fly out to right field to start the inning, then Richards got the ball moving with her third straight hit of the game with a single up the middle. Sophomore Lindsey Kay Bright (Federal Way, Wash./Decatur) advanced Richards with a bunt single. With Richards and Bright ready to run, Dearborn hit a single to left field, but with an error by the leftfielder, Dearborn advanced to second and both Richards and Bright scored, the eventual game-winning runs. With two outs, Wiggins hit an RBI-single to score Dearborn for an extra run. LaBovick grounded out to second to end the inning.
It was up to the Rams defense to finish it off as Fordham put away the batters, one-two-three, including a swinging strikeout by Plimpton to close out the nine-run shutout.
With just two hits, George Washington had base runners in just the second and fourth inning, but neither got any farther than first base.
Up next, Fordham continues on its tour of historic cities as the Rams take to the road and travel up I-95 to Philadelphia, where Fordham will face La Salle in a Sunday noon doubleheader.
