Piscataway, N.J. -
After wins in their last two games at St. Bonaventure, the Fordham Rams looked to win their third game in a row on Tuesday for just the second time this season. Unfortunately, Rutgers' Dennis Hill pitched a complete game nine-hitter, while Michael Lang and Pat Biserta both homered, as the Scarlet Knights topped the Fordham Rams, 7-3, at Bainton Field in Piscataway, N.J.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 10-21 overall, while Rutgers improves to 18-13 on the year.
Fordham opened the game with a 2-0 lead in the first, as Ryan Lee led off the game with a single, but was forced out on a ground ball by Brian Kownacki. After a walk to Mike Mobbs and a line out by Chris Walker, Ryan McCrann ripped a triple down the right field line, scoring both Kownacki and Mobbs for a 2-0 lead.
The lead didn't last long, as Rutgers knotted the game at two in the bottom half of the first on a two-run home run to center by Pat Biserta, his team leading 13th of the year.
The Scarlet Knights then took a 3-2 lead in the third inning, as Michael Lang lined a solo home run just inside the left field foul pole for his ninth of the year.
After scratching a run across in the sixth, Rutgers made it 7-2 with a three-run eighth inning, highlighted by a two-run triple by Brandon Boykin.
Fordham got a run back in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Maghini to score Joe Russo from third, but the Rams would come up short against Rutgers starter Dennis Hill (2-4). Hill allowed three runs on nine hits in his first complete game in two seasons, while adding four strikeouts.
Fordham's Ryan DeMartino (2-1) took the loss in his first career start, allowing three runs on five hits in four innings of work. Joseph Charest pitched the next three innings, as he gave up one unearned run without allowing a hit.
At the plate, McCrann was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI, while Maghini was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Russo and Michael Taddei also had two hits in the game, while Kownacki had his career long 11-game hit streak snapped.
The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Friday, April 16th, as they open a three-game series at home against Saint Louis University, beginning at 4:00 PM.
