BRONX, N.Y. -
Through 10 innings, the score at the Bahoshy Softball Complex read zeroes across the board in the battle of the boroughs between the Fordham Rams and the visiting St. John's Red Storm. In the bottom of the 10th with one out on the board, rookie Jamie LaBovick (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) came up with a three-run homer to the top of the left field fence to win the game, 3-0 for the Rams.
LaBovick's homerun scored both junior Jocelyn Dearborn (New Milford, Pa./Blue Ridge) and sophomore Lindsey Kay Bright (Federal Way, Wash./Decatur). Dearborn had reached first on a single in between the shortstop and thirdbaseman. Bright hit in the same direction, to advance Dearborn into scoring position before LaBovick came up to the plate.
LaBovick and Dearborn were 2-for-5, while Bright was 2-for-4.
Sophomore pitcher Jen Mineau (Schaghticoke, N.Y./Hoosic Valley) pitched all 10 innings for a complete game shut out. Mineau (18-3) allowed just four hits and struck out 10 batters. For St. John's, Linzee Sumrall recorded the loss. She is now 4-8 on the season.
With the win, Fordham is 24-6 overall, with a doubleheader against Rhode Island at noon on Thursday.
In the first inning, Dearborn and Bright were left on base after leading off the inning getting on base with a single and a walk to start the game. Fordham flied out twice and struck out to strand the two on the bags.
In the second inning, Fordham catcher Meghan Shager (Conklin, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) picked off Kristy Cady at first base for the first out of the inning, and taking a runner off the bases for the Red Storm. The final two St. John's batters fouled out and struck out looking to end the inning.
With two outs on the board, Bright got the bats moving in the third inning with a short single to the edge of the grass in left field. LaBovick came up next and sent the ball hard into right center for a single, advancing Bright to third. Senior Erin Fisher (Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville) was walked on the next at bat to load the bases with Beckah Wiggins (Conklin, N.Y./Susquehann Valley) up at the plate. Wiggins popped up to the shortstop to end the inning with both teams still scoreless.
Through regulation, both the Rams and Red Storm remained scoreless. Each team registered three hits a piece. St. John's had one error by the shortstop to give Fisher first base, but no runs were scored.
In the eighth inning, St. John's got runners at the corners as Amber Curry singled to shortstop Samantha Pellechio (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon) and Jenna Berger reached on a fielder's choice to Mineau. Mineau struck out the next batter, Julia Sanchez, as she swung into thin air and Dearborn caught Chelsea Durning's foul ball outside the third base line.
In her first full game in the field for Fordham since California, Pellechio registered four assists at shortstop. The Fordham defense shut down St. John's 1-2-3, seven out of the 10 innings. Four Red Storm players were left in total on the bases.
Up next, the Rams will host Rhode Island in Atlantic 10 action at noon on Thursday. The battle of the Rams will be played at Bahoshy Softball Complex at Murphy Field.
