Behind a four-hit game from Ryan McCrann and three-RBI performances from Chris Walker and Brian Kownacki, the Fordham baseball team came back from a 6-0 deficit to defeat the Fairfield Stags, 13-7, at Houlihan Park in the Bronx.
With the win, Fordham improves to 7-16 overall, while Fairfield drops to 8-12. The Rams have now won three straight games for the first time this season.
Fairfield scored early and often to start the contest, opening with a 6-0 lead through the top of the fourth inning.
After scoring a run in the first inning on a double play, Fairfield tacked on two runs in the second on RBI-doubles from David Dudish and Bill Rafferty to take a 3-0 lead.
After an RBI-single by Carmine DeVito in the third, the Stags received RBI-doubles from Tucker Nathans and Marco Garamella to open up a 6-0 advantage.
The Rams then began mounting their comeback with a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull within, 6-4. Mike Mobbs got things started with a double to lead off the fourth, and scored on a single by Ryan McCrann. Fordham then loaded the bases on a single and a walk, followed by an RBI-single by Brian Kownacki.
In the fifth, the Rams took advantage of two Fairfield errors to score twice, making it a 6-4 contest.
Fordham then exploded for a five-run seventh inning to take a 9-6 lead. The Rams started the inning by loading bases with three straight singles by Ryan Lee, Mobbs, and McCrann. Chris Walker then plated two runs with a ground rule double to left center to tie the game at six. After a ground out, Kownacki came through with a two-run double to left center, scoring McCrann and Walker, to give Fordham their first lead of the game. P.J. Como then singled up the middle to score Kownacki for a 9-6 lead.
The Rams added to the lead with a four-run eighth inning, taking a 13-6 lead. Fordham received a sacrifice fly from Mobbs and three consecutive RBI-doubles by McCrann, Walker, and Ryan David to score the four runs.
The Fordham bullpen held up through the final 5.1 innings, as three relievers allowed just one run over that stretch and struck out six. Daniel Munday (3-1) recorded the win, throwing 1.2 innings of hitless relief, while Dan Sorine recorded his first career save, striking out four in two innings of work.
At the plate, McCrann was 4-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI, while Walker was 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI, and two runs scored. Kownacki added three hits and three RBI with Lee going 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Mobbs also had three hits in the game, giving the Rams six players with at least two hits in the game.
The Fordham baseball team will now open a three-game Atlantic 10 series on Thursday, April 1st, as they host the University of Rhode Island at Houlihan Park, beginning at 2:00 PM.
