JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Fordham softball team had a record day at Jaroschak Field with a 21-1 victory over the Saint Peter's Peahens in the first game and a 12-1 win in the second game. With the wins, the Rams improve to 21-6 overall. The Peahens are 1-11.
In the first game, the Rams set five records. As a team, Fordham had 25 hits to break the school record of 22 set in 2007 against Temple. Junior Beckah Wiggins (Conklin, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) had four of her own as she tallied nine RBI with two homeruns, including a grandslam in the top of the fifth inning to break the all-time RBI in a game record. Allison Twarowski and Melissa Andrews previously held the record with seven in 2006 and 2007, respectively. Wiggins also tied the record for hits in a game with five. Twarowski and Marie Mitchell also share the title. Twarowski had five hits against Buffalo on March 15, 2006, the same game as her seven RBI. Mitchell had five against La Salle on April 12, 2001. Wiggins also ties the long list of players with two homeruns in game. Wiggins tied a fourth individual record with 11 total bases, also the same as Twarowski against Buffalo.
The last time a Fordham player hit a grandslam was Allison Storc on March 28, 2008 vs. Iona. She has a walk-off grandslam in the 9-1 Ram victory.
For the doubleheader, Wiggins had 11 RBI and hit .889, 8-for-9 with five runs and a triple to go along with her five hits and two homers.
Sophomore Jen Mineau (Schaghticoke, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) had six strikeouts for six outs in just two innings as starting pitcher. Rookie Jamie Pollak (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol) got her first appearance in the circle for the Rams and struck out two in the remaining three innings. Pollak earned the win for the Rams, her first (1-0), Mineau's two inning appearance was not enough, despite the start and run differential.
Fordham 21, St. Peter's 1 (5)
In the first inning, Fordham took a 3-0 lead. A single to left field by Wiggins scored junior Jocelyn Dearborn (New Milford, Pa./Blue Ridge) and sophomore Lindsey Kay Bright (Federal Way, Wash./Decatur). Dearborn and Bright both hit singles in their first at bats. Rookie Chelsea Palumbo (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) reached first on an error by the right fielder as senior Erin Fisher (Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville) scored. The Rams made it through eight batters until the inning was over.
In the second inning, Fordham put three more on the board. Bright doubled to left to get on base and rookie Jamie LaBovick (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) singled to left on the next at bat for an RBI. Batting cleanup, Fisher hit a two-run homer to give the Rams a 6-0 lead. Fisher's homer was hard hit down the left field line, despite the wind blowing hard to right. The senior's power hit it over the fence and rolling into the next field.
In the third inning, Fordham batted around the order for five runs, including a home run by Dearborn to start the team off on one out.
The Rams scored five each in the fourth and fifth inning for a final score of 21-1.
The Peahens scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as rightfielder Danielle Cuglietto tallied an RBI as thirdbaseman Samantha Bennett scored from third. Cuglietto got out on the infield hit for two outs.
Fordham 12, St. Peter's 1 (6)
In the second game, Fisher hit a two-run homer to give Fordham a 2-0 lead in the first. The Peahens scored in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to one, 2-1.
In the top of the third, Wiggins hit to second was enough to score LaBovick. With two outs, junior Meghan Shager (Conklin, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) hit an RBI double to score Wiggins and give Fordham a 4-1 lead.
Only one Ram run would score in the fourth inning as Dearborn led the inning off with a walk, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. She advanced to third on a sac bunt by Bright and scored on an error by the thirdbaseman on LaBovick's at bat.
Junior Samantha Pellechio (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon) made her return to the Fordham lineup after a month hiatus due to injury and recorded her first hit with a double to right center. Rookie Brittany Longo (Stamford, Conn./Westhill) pinch ran for Pellechio and scored the run as sophomore Jessica Richards (Trabuco Canyon, Calif./Mission Viejo) hit the ball to the Peahen firstbaseman for an RBI. Richards was out at first, for just the second out of the inning. Longo's run gave Fordham a 6-1 lead.
Wiggins hit a triple in the top of sixth to score LaBovick for a 7-1 lead. LaBovick led off the inning with a double down the left field line. The next three Fordham batters were walked, and Wiggins stole home for the eighth Fordham run. Dearborn's sac hit to left field scored the eventual game winner as sophomore Nicole Callahan (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) crossed the plate for the 11th run. Richards scored an Bright's hit to the pitcher which was baubled for the error.
Junior Chelsea Plimpton (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsvile South) earned the win for Fordham. Plimpton is now 4-2. She pitched four innings and allowed just three hits, one run and struck out six. LaBovick came in to relief in the fifth.
Up next, Fordham will begin Atlantic 10 action with a road trip to Dayton, Ohio. The Rams and Flyers will play a doubleheader starting at noon on Sunday, March 28.
