Pittsburgh's Corey Baker threw a complete game six-hitter, while Danny Lopez drove in three runs, as the Panthers topped the Fordham Rams, 10-1, in the opening game of their three-game series in Vero Beach, Florida.
With the loss, Fordham fell to 3-8 on the season, while Pittsburgh improved to 8-4.
The game did not open well for Fordham, as Pittsburgh's Danny Lopez led off the game with a solo home run to right field, his second of the season, for a 1-0 lead off Fordham starter Max Krakowiak.
The Panthers then took advantage of two Fordham miscues in the fourth to explode for seven runs and an 8-0 lead. The rally was highlighted by back-to-back two-run singles by Lopez and John Schultz.
The Panthers made it 10-0 in the seventh with two more runs on an RBI-double by Joe Leonard and a fielder's choice by Travis Whitmore.
Pittsburgh's Corey Baker (4-0) was in control for most of the game, throwing a complete game, allowing one run on six hits with six strikeouts. Fordham did break up Baker's shutout bid in the bottom of the ninth, as Mike Mobbs singled, stole second, and scored on a single by Stephen McSherry.
For Fordham, Max Krakowiak (0-2) took the loss, allowing nine runs on nine hits with four strikeouts. At the plate, McSherry was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, while Ryan McCrann also had a pair of hits.
The same two teams will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday, March 14th, with a doubleheader, beginning at 2:30 PM.
