| Highlights vs. New York Tech
Bronx, N.Y. -
Fordham's Ryan Lee and Ryan Maghini put together back-to-back sacrifice flies in the bottom of the eighth inning, which proved to be the difference, as the Rams topped the New York Tech Bears, 7-5, at Houlihan Park on Wednesday.
With the win, Fordham improves to 3-7 overall, while the Bears are 0-3.
The Bears opened with a 1-0 lead in the first inning, as Effrey Valdez connected for a two-out double, and scored on a single by Christian Dienna.
Fordham answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take their first lead of the game. Nick Martinez led off with a walk and scored on a double to right center by Joe Russo. Russo then moved to third on a Chris Walker single, and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Ryan McCrann.
The Rams made it a 3-1 game in the second, as with runners at first and third base, Martinez stole second with the throw going into the outfield, allowing P.J. Como to score from third. Como had reached base on an infield single, and went to third after a stolen base and a wild pitch.
New York Tech then regained the lead at 4-3 in the third inning, taking advantage of a couple of hit batsmen and a Fordham error. The Bears opened the rally with a one-out single and a hit by pitch. Steve McNamara then hit a fielder's choice to Fordham's starting pitcher Brian Pendergast. Pendergast went to second on the play, but the ball was dropped, loading the bases. Valdez was then hit by a pitch, while Greg Gilroy drew a walk to force in two runs. Ryan Campbell then ripped a single of Pendergast to score another run and take the 4-3 lead.
Fordham tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, as Mike Mobbs crushed a solo home run over the centerfield wall for his first of the season.
The Rams then took the lead back in the seventh at 5-4. Martinez drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a single by Russo. Walker then hit a short dribbler to third, allowing Martinez to score from third.
The Fordham lead was short lived, however, as the Bears tied the game at five on an RBI-single by Brian Smith in the top of the eighth inning.
Fordham battled back again to take a 7-5 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Mobbs was hit by a Mike Roth pitch to start the rally, followed by a single by Michael Taddei. After a sac bunt advanced the runners, Ryan Lee lifted a fly ball to left, which Matthew Carr dropped, allowing Mobbs to score and Taddei to go to third. Ryan Maghini then plated Taddei with another fly ball, giving Fordham a two-run cushion.
Fordham reliever Daniel Munday (2-1) held off the Bears in the ninth inning, inducing three groundouts to end the game. Munday allowed two hits in 1.1 innings of relief, while Pendergast received a no-decision, allowing one earned run on six hits with six strikeouts in six innings of work.
At the plate, Russo, Taddei and Como each had a pair of hits, while Martinez and Mobbs each scored twice.
The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Friday, March 12th, when open an eight-game Florida road trip against Pittsburgh in West Palm Beach, Florida.
