Junior catcher Meghan Shager (Conklin, N.Y.) drove in the winning run for Fordham in the sixth inning with a single to the Beavers' pitcher to help Fordham to a 3-2 victory over Oregon State in their second game on Friday in the Palm Springs Classic. With the win, Fordham split the day, after losing 5-2 to No. 13/14 Cal earlier in the afternoon.
With the win, Fordham advances to 5-3 on the season and Oregon State falls to 4-8 overall.
Beckah Wiggins (Conklin, N.Y.) who went 2-for-4 with a run against No. 14/13 Cal in the afternoon game, got right into the action getting run on the board for Fordham with a double to right center to score Jocelyn Dearborn (New Milford, Pa.) from second.
Oregon State scored twice in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Fordham wouldn't score again until the fifth inning when Dearborn hit a triple down the right field line to score Jessica Richards (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.), with one out on the board. Richards reached first on an error by the Beavers' short stop. On the next at bat, sophomore rightfielder Lindsey Kay Bright (Federal Way, Wash.) singled to third base and the Rams had runners at the corners. That was it for the inning as Fordham couldn't score the runners with a line out and strike out, but Dearborn's triple was enough to tie the score at 2-2 going into the bottom of the fifth.
The Rams' got the three of the four Oregon State batters out to hold the Beavers for the rest of the inning.
In the sixth, Fordham scored again, this time with two outs on the board. With sophomore Jessica Richards (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) on second and senior Erin Fisher (Woodinville, Wash.) at third, Shager singled to pitcher Kelly Dyer to score Fisher and advance Richards to third. Dearborn lined out on the full count to end the inning with the Rams' leading 3-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore pitcher Jen Mineau (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) struck out two of the three batters, to tally nine in six innings to hold Oregon State scoreless again.
With two outs on Fordham in the final inning, Wiggins reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop. Sophomore Jamie LaBovick (Peoria, Ariz.) popped up to the second baseman to end the inning.
In Oregon's final at bat Mineau struck out the first batter on three straight pitches. LaBovick made the next out for Fordham as the Beavers' No. 7 batter, Ally Kutz grounded out at first. Mineau made the final out for Fordham, striking out Alana Ford to hold the Beavers and seal the deal on her fourth victory of the season.
Mineau (4-1) earned the win for the Rams, pitching all seven innings with 11 strikeouts in 26 batters faced. She allowed four hits, including one home run and one walk.
Dyer recorded the loss for Oregon State (1-1). She struck out five Rams and allowed six hits.
Dearborn was 2-for-4 with one run for Fordham. Shager was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Fisher and Richards also scored for the Rams.
Fordham will play its final game of the Palm Springs Classic on Saturday against UNLV. The Rams will play the Rebels at 11:30 p.m. ET.
