Cathedral City, Calif. - Fordham played it's first of two games against West Coast teams Cal and Oregon State on Friday at the Palm Springs Classic. In the first game, Fordham lost 5-2 against No. 14/13 California-Berkley 5-2 at the Big League Dreams Complex in Cathedral City, Calif. Game two, against Oregon State, is scheduled for 11:30 p.m. ET.

Fordham and Cal were tied at 0-0 through the first inning. The Golden Bears broke the lull as Elia Reid doubled up the middle, off starting sophomore pitcher Jen Mineau (3-1) (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) to send in Taylor Kelly from second base.

In the bottom of the second, Fordham loaded the bases with a walk from senior Erin Fisher (Woodinville, Wash.), a single from Jamie LaBovick (Peoria, Ariz.) and another walk from sophomore Nicole Callahan (Freehold, N.J.) which forced Cal to make some substitutions, including a new pitcher in Valerie Arioto (4-2). The substitutions worked as the next two Ram batters were struck out and Callahan got thrown out at second on a fielder's choice, no runs were scored.

Arioto seemed to be the change the Golden Bears needed as she homered to left field in the next inning, sending in Thomas who bunted for a single on her at bat. Fordham got out of the inning with a ground out to Mineau, a pop up to Jocelyn Dearborn (New Milford, Pa.) and a fly out to sophomore Lindsey Kay Bright (Federal Way, Wash.).

Cal was up 3-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. Fordham got runners in scoring position the second-straight inning as Bright walked on the lead off at bat, junior Beckah Wiggins (Conklin, N.Y.) singled through the left side to advance Bright. singled up the widdle to send Bright home to score. Wiggins got out on the throw to second to put two outs on the board. LaBovick struck out on the next at bat as Fordham went into the fourth inning down 3-1.

Fordham changed it up as Chelsea Plimpton came in to pitch for Mineau. Plimpton's pitching made it a one-two-three inning for the Rams, as she struck out the first batter, fouled out the second and forced a fly out for the third out.

Fordham's fourth inning at bat mirrored Cal's as all three batters got out.

Arioto and Shannon Thomas got on base and were advanced into scoring position off a wild pitch. With a single from Frani Echavarria, both runners scored and the Bears too a 5-1 lead.

The Rams scored again in the sixth inning with Wiggins starting them off with a single to third base. Wiggins advanced to scoring positing taking both second and third on wild pitches. An RBI single from Callahan, with two outs on the board, scored Wiggins to bring the Rams within three runs, 5-2. Richards took Arioto to a full count but struck out swinging to end the inning.

In the final inning, Fordham couldn't get it going again and the Golden Bears won 5-2.

Wiggins was 2-for-4 with one run. Fisher and Callahan were both 1-for-2 with an RBI each.
