New Haven, Conn. - After falling 5-4 to Lafayette in the opening round of the 2010 Men's College Squash Association National Team Championships, the Fordham squad rebounded to upend the College of Charleston, 7-2, to advance to the consolation finals in the Hawthorn Division where the Rams picked up a 6-3 win over Bucknell on Sunday.
Eli Plangger was victorious for the Rams at the third spot, defeating Bucknell's Morgan Beeson (11-5, 11-4, 11-2) while James Lechleitner took the fourth position from Alden French in three straight by scores of 12-10, 11-8, and 11-5.
Andrew Grosner picked up another team point for Fordham by winning the sixth spot over Nicolas Beaumont by a 3-0 score (11-4, 11-5, 11-9) while Nick Reed blanked Elena Hayssen at the seventh position by scores of 11-6, 11-5, and 11-4. Chris Souther (11-8, 11-4, 11-8) and Andrew Craig (11-4, 11-8, 11-3) provided the winning margin for the Rams, winning at at the eighth and ninth positions, respectively.
Fordham almost gained points from the first and second position as Colin Corbett and Andriy Kulak each took his opponent to five games before falling. Corbett took the first game from Bucknell's Kirk Bonner, 11-8, but dropped the next two, 11-3 and 11-5. But Corbett fiored a fifth game with an 11-6 win in game four but lost the deciding game by a score of 11-5. Kulak also opened his match by winning the first game, 11-7, and dropping the next two (11-4 and 12-11) before coming back to win the fourth, 11-7. But he too fell in the final game by a score of 11-8.
