Newport News, Va. - The Fordham women's softball team went for shut out No. 2 as they outscored Morehead State, 4-0, during Sunday's first game of the Lancer Invitational.

With the win, the Rams are 2-1 so far on the season, and gained their second win over the Eagles at the Lancer Invitational as they downed MSU (1-2), 10-0 on Saturday.

In the circle for the Rams was rookie Jamie LaBovick (Peoria, Ariz.). Labovick opened the game striking out Morehead's leadoff batter, third baseman Rebecca Butler. It was three batters up, three down as the next two on MSU's lineup were put out by the Fordham defense.

Overall LaBovick (1-0) struck out four batters in five innings of work. The rookie allowed just four hits and faced 19 batters.

With the Rams up, 4-0 in the fifth inning, sophomore Jen Mineau (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) came into the game and out to the circle in the top of the sixth to seal the up the victory for Fordham. Lights out at the circle for the second-straight game, Mineau struck out six of the seven batters she faced, allowing Morehead State not even the thought of a come back, and helping LaBovick to her first win of the season.

In the first inning, the Rams went to work right away, as junior third baseman Jocelyn Dearborn (New Milford, Pa.) singled to left field. Sophomore Lindsey Kay Bright (Federal Way, Wash.) layed down the bunt to advance Dearborn, but fielder's choice throw the wrong way allowed Bright to be safe at first. A single through the left side by the Rams' No. 3 batter, junior shortstop Samantha Pellechio, advanced both Dearborn and Bright, with two Rams' now in scoring position and no outs. Junior Beckah Wiggins (Conklin, N.Y.) struck out swinging in the next Fordham at bat, but Dearborn took matters into her own hands and scored on a ball that slipped by MSU's catcher Bianca Cardenas, as Fordham took the 1-0 lead. Both senior Erin Fisher (Woodinville, Wash.) and Labovick struck out to end the inning for the Rams.

Fordham came on just as strong in the bottom of the second, as the first two Fordham batters, sophomore Jessica Richards (Trabuco, Calif.) and sophomore Nicole Callahan (Freehold, N.J.) singled into the outfield, one to the right, one to the left. Fordham's catcher, junior Meghan Shager (Conklin, N.Y.) walked on the subsequent at bat, advancing both Richards and Callahan to scoring position. Dearborn sent the ball to deep center for a sac fly, scoring Richards and advancing Callahan for a 2-0 Fordham lead.

With Fordham runners on the corners, Shager saw the opportunity on the next at bat to steal second. With two Ram runners ready to score, Bright was up for the second time. Bright singled down the left field line as Callahan scored, Rams up 3-0. On the late throw to home, Bright grabbed the extra base. The Rams' once again had runners at second and third with just one out. Up next, Pellechio's single to left allowed Shager to score and the Rams took a 4-0 advantage over Morehead State. On the throw, Pellechio was able to do the same as Bright did and advanced to second, Bright made it to third but was thrown out trying to grab the extra run. Wiggins flied out to right field on the next at bat as the Rams led 4-0 at the end of the second inning.

The score would stay the same for the rest of the game as the closest Morehead State would get to home plate was second base.

On defense, Wiggins, playing first base, had five put outs for the Rams. Dearborn finished with one run, one RBI and one hit. Bright and Pellechio also earned an RBI and two hits each. Fordham had nine hits to Morehead State's five.

Up next, the Rams will complete it's run at the Lancer Leadoff Invitational with a single game against Quinnipiac at 1 p.m.
