Box Score | 2/11/10 - Highlights vs. Dayton
Bronx, N.Y. - Piloted by 10 3-pointers, shooting 75 percent in the second half, the Dayton Flyers were able to keep a steady lead over the Fordham Rams, despite a season-best field goal shooting effort of nine field goals from Ram sophomore guard Becky Peters (Plainsboro, N.J.).
Peters' 19 points came of 9-for-19 shooting, and tied her second-best point scoring effort this season. The last time Peters' had 19 points was against Rider on Dec. 5.
With the loss the Rams go into the weekend 2-8 in the conference and 8-16 overall. The Flyers, who have steadily received votes in the top 25, advance to 7-2 in the A-10 and 19-5 overall.
Dayton led by just a steady seven points for the majority of the game before pulling away in the middle of the second half.
Peters' 19 points were a team high, while junior forward Tiffany Stokes (Lynwood, Ill.) led the Rams at the boards with seven. Junior guard Kyara Weekes (Cambridge, Mass.) added three assists to her season total.
Peters started early on the first of her 19 points as she got the Rams on the board with two quick unassisted jump shots. Senior forward Randall Hurst (West Bloomfield, Mich.) followed suit, coming off the bench to score on her first touch, as the Flyers led 8-6, six minutes into the game. Stokes cut the Flyers' lead to one, 8-7, making one of two shots at the charity stripe.
After Dayton pulled ahead 14-7, it was Peters once again with a jumper and layup to bring Fordham within one possession, 14-11 and force a Dayton time out at 9:55.
Scoreless for the next four minutes of play, junior forward Caitlin Shadbolt (Coomboona, Australia) broke the lull with a long range jumper at 5:18. Dayton led 21-13.
On the next two Fordham possessions, Weekes pulled up for a trey, and Kristina Bell (West Bloomfield, Mich.) sunk a quick lay up to keep score within seven, 25-18 with 3:09 remaining in the first half.
With just under two minutes remaining in the first half, Dayton and Fordham traded baskets. With 17 seconds left, a 3-pointer by junior guard Kristin Daugherty gave Dayton its largest lead of the half, 32-22. Fordham's rookie guard Charlotte Stoddart (Manchester, England) answered right back with a 3-pointer dished out by freshman guard Arielle Collins (Hamilton, N.J.) to send the Rams into the halftime break down seven once again, 32-25.
The Rams' defense held the Flyers to just four points in the opening six minutes of the second half, half the amount of points from the first. Peters got the ball rolling for the Rams with another two baskets, bringing Fordham within their closest margin since the beginning of the first half, 34-29, at 16:43.
With just over a minute to play, Dayton had their largest lead of the game, 72-39, spurred by a 24-6 run over a nine-minute span from 12:10 to 2:55. At 2:46, Shaddbolt broke Fordham's drought with a turn around jumper in the paint passed in by Collins. Sophomore guard Tyonna Willingham (Cary, N.C.) added two more with bonus shots from the foul line, but the second half Dayton scoring-spree was too much for the Rams to overcome as the game ended with the final score, 72-42.
For the Flyers, Kari Daugherty led with a team high 16 points off the bench. Kristin Daugherty had a second-best team high of 11.
Up next, the Rams will take to the road again, traveling west to Philadelphia for their third road trip in four games. Fordham will play La Salle for the second time this season, this time on La Salle's home court for a 1 p.m. tip on Saturday, Feb. 13. The Rams and Explorers met previously this season on Saturday, Jan. 31 at Rose Hill. Fordham defeated La Salle, 57-47.
