Bronx, N.Y. -
The Fordham Rams celebrated Senior Day on Sunday in the hopes that for the fourth straight year, Fordham would be heading back to the Atlantic 10 Championship. However, Xavier scored twice in the final 20 minutes of Sunday's men's soccer finale to oust the Rams from Atlantic 10 Championship contention with a 2-1 decision.
The loss dropped Fordham 10-8-0 overall, 5-4 in the Atlantic 10, while Xavier improved to 8-6-3, 5-4 in the league. Based on the other results of the day, Fordham found itself in a three-way tie with Xavier and Massachusetts for the final playoff spot, but lost out to the Musketeers on the tie-breaker.
After a scoreless first half, it was Fordham that opened the scoring in the 60th minute. John McHugh cut a cross from the left sideline, which Julian Nagel headed into the right side of the net for his second goal of the season.
Xavier answered back in the 72nd minute, as Luke Spencer headed in his fourth goal of the season into the top left corner of the net off a James Getzen corner kick.
The Musketeers then snagged the lead in the 83rd minute, as El-Hadji Dieng picked up a loose ball rebound, and fired in a goal from 15 yards out for his second tally of the season.
The Rams tried to find the equalizer but were denied, as Fordham's best opportunity was a Michael Valencia shot in the 86th minute that sailed just over the crossbar.
In net, Fordham's Ryan Meara made three saves in the loss, while Justin Marshall made three saves in the win.
