The Fordham volleyball team gave Saint Louis all it could handle today before finally succumbing to the Billikens, three sets to one, in an Atlantic 10 match in the Rose Hill Gym. Saint Louis took the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-15, before the Rams came back with a 28-26 win in the third set to force a fourth set that was won by the Billikens, 25-17.
With the loss, Fordham evens its record at 16-16 overall, 6-7 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Louis improves to 17-10 overall, 10-3 in the conference.
The Rams led most of the way in the first set, leading 12-8 before Saint Louis cut the lead back to two, 15-14. A Brittany Daulton kill bumped the Fordham lead back to two, 16-14, but a pair of kills from Alyssa Deno for Saint Louis knotted the set at 16. The set would be tied three more times, the final time at 20 when the Billikens scored five straight points for the 25-20 win.
The second set was all Saint Louis as the Billikens opened the set with a 7-2 lead and built the lead to as many as ten, 15-5, en route to the 25-15 win. Saint Louis hit a match best .333 in the set while the Rams hit .059.
The Rams trailed 11-5 in the third set but battled back, scoring eight of the next nine points to take a 13-12 lead on a Saint Louis attack error. The Billikens tied the set at 14 before Fordham accounted for six of the next seven points in taking a 20-15 lead on a Jenna Hart solo block. But Saint Louis battled back, scoring five unanswered points to tie the set at 20 and neither team would lead by more than one until Katie Wells put down a kill to win the set for the Rams, 28-26.
Saint Louis jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth set but the Rams came back, eventually tying the set at eleven on a pair of Billiken attack errors. But Saint Louis responded with three straight points to take a 14-11 lead before a Wells kills brought the Rams to within two, 14-12, but that was as close as they would get.
Kailee May and Wells each finished with 12 kills for Fordham while May added ten digs, and Mary Diamantidis dished out 39 assists.
The Rams will next be in action on Friday, November 12th as they host the University of Dayton Flyers in an Atlantic 10 match at 5:00 p.m. in the Rose Hill Gym.
