Behind superb efforts by the Rams' outside hitters, Brittany Daulton and Kailee May, the Fordham volleyball team rallied from a set down on two occasions to defeat the George Washington Colonials in five sets at the Smith Center in Washington, D.C. Final set scores were 21-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17, and 15-12.
With the win, Fordham moves to 16-15 on the year, 6-6 in the Atlantic 10, while George Washington drops to 17-12 overall, 6-6 in the league. The win also moves Fordham into a tie with George Washington for fifth place in the Atlantic 10 with three matches remaining until the Atlantic 10 Championship in Cincinnati, Ohio, where the top six teams in the league will face off.
After dropping the opening set, Fordham was down one, 19-18 in set two, before a four-point spurt, highlighted by a kill and a service ace by Brittany Daulton, put the Rams ahead, 22-19. Kailee May then knocked down three straight kills, to give Fordham the set win.
George Washington went back ahead in the match with a 25-22 set win, but May rallied Fordham back in set four with eight kills, as the Rams forced a fifth and deciding set.
With the score tied at nine, Fordham took a two-point edge on kills by Christi Griffiths and Maria Rodenberg at 11-9. After a kill by the Colonials, Daulton and May connected for back-to-back kills, giving Fordham a 13-10 lead. George Washington got to within one at 13-12, but the Rams got consecutive blocks from Griffiths and Jenna Hart and then Hart and Katie Wells to finish off the comeback win.
For Fordham, May and Daulton each had 18 kills with May adding 10 digs and Daulton having seven. Wells chipped in 10 kills and four blocks with Griffiths having nine kills and five blocks. Hart also added five blocks to go with five kills with Mary Diamantidis dishing out 49 assists and 11 digs.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Sunday, November 7th, when the Rams host Saint Louis University in the Rose Hill Gym, beginning at 2:00 PM.
