Bronx, N.Y. -
Behind a .341 team hitting percentage and 10 kills by Amanda Cowdrey, the 17th-ranked Dayton Flyers posted a three-set sweep against the Fordham Rams on Friday night at the Rose Hill Gym. Final set scores were 25-16, 25-18, and 25-15.
With the loss, Fordham drops to 16-17 overall, 6-8 in the Atlantic 10, while Dayton improves to 23-3 overall, 14-0 in the league. The loss coupled with a Charlotte win and a George Washington loss put the Rams in a three-way tie for fifth place with the 49ers and Colonials. Only two of the three will make the Atlantic 10 Championship tournament next weekend with each having one match remaining on Sunday.
Set one saw Fordham trailing by just two, 9-7, before the Flyers netted six straight points to open up a 15-7 advantage. Dayton's Yvonne Marten had two kills and a block in that stretch to lead the Flyers. The Rams were unable to get closer than eight points the rest of the way, falling by a 25-16 count.
In the second set, Fordham stayed close to the Flyers, as two kills in the middle of the set by Christi Griffiths cut the Rams' deficit to 18-15. After an attack error made it 18-16, Dayton scored the next five points, two of which on Becky Novacek blocks, to grab hold of a 23-16 lead, eventually taking the set by seven.
Set three was all Dayton, as the Flyers led by double figures most of the set, as the team hit .480 in the final game.
For Fordham, Katie Wells led the Rams with 10 kills and three blocks, while Kailee May had eight kills and five digs. Brittany Daulton chipped in six kills and eight digs with Sara Friede having seven digs.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Sunday, November 14th, when the Rams travel to Temple University for its regular season finale at 1:00 PM in Philadelphia, Pa.
