Philadelphia, Pa. -
The Fordham University women's soccer team continued its Atlantic 10 season today at La Salle and it seemed that the Rams would take away three points with a win until the Explorers scored with just under four minutes remaining as the two teams played to a 2-2 overtime tie in McCarthy Stadium.
With the tie, the Rams sit at 5-7-1 overall, 1-1-1 in the Atlantic 10, while La Salle is currently 6-6-2 overall, 0-2-1 in conference play.
Mariella Romano had the first scoring chance in the game for the Rams but her shot in the fifth minute was saved by La Salle keeper Gabby Pakhtigian. Fifteen minutes later, Annie Worden got Fordham on the board when she took a rebound of a Michelle Ancelj shot and slid it past Pakhtigian for her first goal of the year.
The score remained 1-0 until the 28th minute when Renee Washington fed Jess Hopton in alone on Fordham goalie Sarah Zieman and Hopton beat Zieman for her first tally of the year.
The Explorers had a chance to take the lead four minutes later but Zieman made consecutive saves on shots from Washington and Leigh Gray.
A few minutes later, Worden almost scored her second of the game, but her shot was saved by a La Salle defender.
The game remained tied until the 55th minute when Michaela Murphy connected with Katie McDermott and McDermott found the back of the net from 20 yards with her third goal of the season.
After Pakhtigian made saves on shots from Ancelj in the 70th minute,
Mary Solimine in the 73rd minute and
Kaitlyn Carballeira in the 77th minute, La Salle put the pressure on Zieman, taking three shots over the next six minutes before Gray evened the game with an assist from Heather Steadman in the 87th minute.
Gray almost won the game for the Explorers just before the end of regulation but Zieman was able to make the save on her shot with two seconds remaining.
La Salle had two good chances for the win in the first overtime but Courtney Niemiec hit the cross bar in the 97th minute and Anna Dolhansky hit the post two minutes later.
The Explorers also controlled play in the second overtime, outshooting the Rams 5-0, but Zieman was up to the task, making four saves to preserve the tie.
Zieman finished with a career-high ten saves for the Rams while Pakhtigian made eight for La Salle, who outshot the Rams 23-12 on the day.
The Rams will next be in action on Friday, October 15th, when they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa., to face the Duquesne University Dukes in an Atlantic 10 match at 7:00 p.m.
