The Fordham water polo team opened up a five-match west coast trip on Thursday night at Cal-Baptist. Despite three Rams finishing with multi-goal games, Cal-Baptist came away with a 14-9 victory in Riverside, California.
Fordham opened strong with a 3-1 lead on an extra-man goal by Alex Powell, a regular strength goal by Ali Arat, and a five-meter goal from Mikey Edwards. Cal-Baptist however netted two goals in the final 1:28 to knot the game at three after the first quarter.
Cal-Baptist opened with the first two goals of the second quarter before Daniel Muñoz scored for Fordham to make a 5-4 game. The Lancers then got a goal from Alan Ogden, his second of four goals in the game, to put the lead at 6-4 at halftime.
Fordham cut the lead back to one on an extra-man goal by Powell, but the Lancers would score four of the next five goals, opening up a four-goal lead at 10-6. Arat netted back-to-back tallies at the end of the third quarter for Fordham, to pull back within two, 10-8, heading into the final frame.
In that last session, Fordham remained down two at 11-9, before the Lancers scored the final three goals of the match to win by a 14-9 count.
For Fordham, Arat totaled four goals with Powell and Edwards each having two and Muñoz having the final tally. In net, Christian Flessner made six saves in three quarters of play, while Eric Mullery had two stops in the final quarter.
The Fordham water polo team will continue its California trip on Friday, October 8th, when they open play at the Claremont Convergence Tournament. Fordham will face Concordia (Calif.) at 1:00 PM Eastern and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 5:00 PM.
