Bronx, N.Y. -
The Fordham women's soccer team sent off its six-person senior class with a 2-0 win over Rhode Island at Jack Coffey Field on goals by Mariella Romano and Kelley Alpaugh. However, the win wasn't enough for Fordham to qualify for the Atlantic 10 Championship, as La Salle topped Massachusetts to earn the final playoff berth.
With the win, Fordham ends its season at 8-10-1 overall, 4-4-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Rhode Island concludes its season at 3-13-2 on the year, 3-5-1 in the league.
After a scoreless first half, Fordham got the first goal of the game in the 53rd minute. Katie McDermott chipped a pass into the box, which Michelle Ancelj flicked with her head toward the left side. The ball found Mariella Romano, who buried it into the top middle of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
Romano then set up Fordham's second marker of the game in the 68th minute, as she got to the ball near the endline. She then headed the ball back across the front of the net, as Kelley Alpaugh tracked it down, and knocked it back into the net for her first collegiate goal.
Fordham was able to lock down Rhode Island over the final 22 minutes to earn the shutout win, as Rachel Suther finished with three saves for her fourth shutout of the season.
The game concluded the four-year careers of seniors McDermott, Ancelj, Lauren Nowakowski, Danielle Ingram, Kelsey Walker, and Colleen Brady, as all were honored prior to the game.
