In yet another huge Atlantic 10 contest with conference tournament implications, the Fordham Rams pulled out a 1-0 overtime win over the Richmond Spiders on Sunday at Jack Coffey Field behind a goal from junior Mariella Romano.
With the win, Fordham improves to 7-9-1 overall, 3-3-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Richmond moves to 5-9-2 on the year, 2-4-1 in the league.
Despite Richmond holding a 9-7 shot advantage and a 6-2 margin in corners, the game was scoreless, heading into overtime.
Just over two minutes into overtime, Fordham received a throw-in near its bench. The ball was knocked through to sophomore Annie Worden, as she headed toward the top of the box. Worden then dished a pass to Mariella Romano, who found the top right corner of the net from 15 yards out for her second overtime game-winner this season and third goal overall.
In goal, Sarah Zieman made five saves for her second shutout of the year, as she improved to 3-2-1 on the year. For Richmond, Melissa Pacheco had three saves in the loss.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Friday, October 29th, as it hosts the University of Massachusetts for an Atlantic 10 match-up, beginning at 7:00 PM on Jack Coffey Field.
