With only four league games remaining, the Friday night showdown seemed like a must-win game for the Fordham women's soccer team against the George Washington Colonials. The Rams got that win behind a superb effort from their seniors, as Lauren Nowakowski netted a goal and an assist, while Michelle Ancelj scored the game-winning goal, as the Rams topped the Colonials, 2-1, at Jack Coffey Field.
With the win, Fordham improves to 6-9-1 overall, 2-3-1 in the Atlantic 10, while George Washington moves to 9-6-0 on the year, 3-3-0 in the league.
Fordham opened the scoring in the first half in the 15th minute on a great passing effort by the Rams. Kelsey Dougherty Howard ran the ball to the end line and crossed the ball back toward the front of the goal. The ball was then flicked from Mariella Romano to Lauren Nowakowski, who blasted home her first career goal at Fordham in 60 career games.
The Colonials would find the equalizer in the second half at the 63:06 mark. On the left side of the box, Sierra Smidinger fired the ball toward the far post, which Michelle Aueron was able to deflect into the net for her first goal of the season.
The Rams answered back in the 82nd minute with the go-ahead goal. Nowakowski chipped a diagonal pass to Michelle Ancelj on the left side of the box. Ancelj cut inside and shot home her career-high fifth goal of the season from 15 yards.
Fordham was able to hold the Colonials at bay for the final eight minutes, as Sarah Zieman made one save for her second win of the season, evening her record at 2-2-1 on the year.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, October 24th, as it hosts the University of Richmond for an Atlantic 10 match-up, beginning at 1:00 PM on Jack Coffey Field.
