Behind a solid .293 team hitting performance, the Fordham volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak on Wednesday night with a 3-2 victory over the Fairfield Stags at the Rose Hill Gym. Final set scores were 25-22, 24-26, 25-23, 19-25, and 15-11.
With the win, Fordham moves to 13-14 overall, while Fairfield falls to 8-14.
The opening set saw nine tie scores with the last at 22 all, before Fordham rallied for the final three points to win the first set. The Rams received points on a Fairfield error, and kills by Christi Griffiths and Mary Diamantidis.
Set two was even closer with 15 ties. Fordham earned the first set point at 24-23 on a kill by Kailee May. Fairfield responded with three straight points, however to earn the set win, 26-24, capped off by a block by Hayley Moyer and Rachel Romansky.
Fordham took back a one-set lead in the third stanza with a 25-23 win. At 23 all,
Katie Wells knocked down a kill for set point with Griffiths finishing the set with a kill.
The Stags though would not go away in set four. At 18 all, the Stags scored seven of the next eight points to force a fifth and deciding set. In that run, Fairfield had three service aces, two of which came from Haililani Pokipala.
In the final set, it was extremely tight with eight ties and four lead changes. At 10 all, Fairfield committed an error, off an amazing save at the net by Diamantidis, which was followed by back-to-back Fordham blocks by Diamantidis and Randi Ewing to give Fordham a 13-10 lead. After an error, Diamantidis knocked down another kill for match point, which was followed by a Fairfield attack error, giving Fordham the win.
For Fordham, Diamantidis finished with 49 assists, three kills, five digs, and three blocks, while May had a team-high 16 kills to go with four digs. Wells posted 12 kills and six blocks with Griffiths adding 13 kills, five digs, four blocks and three aces. Ewing chipped in seven kills and six blocks, with Emily Atwood and Maria Rodenberg having eight and nine digs, respectively.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Saturday, October 23rd, when the Rams have an Atlantic 10 match at the University of Rhode Island, beginning at 4:00 PM.
Game Notes: Fordham has now won each of the last three meetings with Fairfield, all five-set matches... With 13 kills, Christi Griffiths moved past the 1,300-kill plateau, joining Val Bosticco (1989-92), as the only Rams to reach that mark... Griffiths also passed Stephanie Frost's career record of 479 sets played (2004-07) at 484... With six blocks, Katie Wells became the third Ram with 300 career blocks, joining Griffiths and Marija Markovic (2004-06).
