Bronx, N.Y. -
The annual "Battle of the Bronx" match-up between Fordham and Manhattan on the pitch was exactly that: a battle. For the fifth time in the last six meetings, the extremely physical game went in favor of Fordham, as the Rams came out on top with a 1-0 win over the Jaspers at Jack Coffey Field.
With the win, Fordham moves to 5-4-0 on the year with Manhattan falling to 0-6-0. The win was the fourth in the last five games for Fordham, as the Rams head into conference play next weekend.
Fordham scored the lone goal of the contest at the 12:20 mark of the first half. Following a foul on Manhattan near the end line, Fordham's John Niyonsaba took the free kick, which Marcus Axelsson headed in on a flick for his first goal of the season.
The score remained at 1-0 despite some close calls. In the early minutes of the second half, Fordham's Julian Nagel got a hold off a shot that hit off the crossbar back into play. In all, Fordham had a 12-4 shot advantage against the Jaspers, who were held to just one shot and one corner kick in the second half.
In net, Fordham's Ryan Meara posted his second consecutive shutout and third overall, making one save in the match, while Manhattan's Christopher Lands had six saves.
The Fordham men's soccer team will next be in action on Friday, October 8th, as it begins Atlantic 10 conference play at La Salle, as the second half of a soccer doubleheader. The match is set for an approximate 7:30 PM start.
