Villanova's Maggie Mergan and Morgan Petkovich posted 14 kills and 13 kills, respectively, as the Villanova Wildcats defeated the Fordham Rams in three sets at the Rose Hill Gym. Final set scores were 25-20, 25-19, and 25-21.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 12-12 overall, while Villanova improves to 17-4.
Set one saw Villanova get out to a three-point edge, but three kills by Fordham's Kailee May would tie the score at ten all. The Wildcats regained their composure, scoring nine of the next 13 points to grab a 19-14 lead, and eventually win the set by that five-point margin.
In the second set, Fordham got the early 3-1 lead before a 12-4 run by the Wildcats put Villanova ahead 13-7. Villanova would lead by as many as nine, before Fordham earned six straight points, highlighted by kills from Brittany Daulton and May to make it a 20-17 deficit. Villanova responded with four straight points to earn set point, and eventually received a kill from Maggie Mergen to end the set at 25-19.
Set three saw six tie scores with the final tie at 17 all, but Villanova scored eight of the final 12 points to earn the match win at 25-21.
For Fordham, Daulton finished with a team-high 12 kills to go with five digs, while May added nine kills. Mary Diamantidis ended the match with a double-double at 24 assists and 11 digs, while Maria Rodenberg added 18 digs and six assists. Christi Griffiths also had eight kills and eight digs for the Rams.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Friday, October 15th, when the Rams play at Atlantic 10 opponent, Duquesne University, beginning at 7:00 PM.
