Looking for its first 3-0 conference start, the Fordham volleyball team traveled to Cincinnati to face the Xavier Musketeers at the Cintas Center. In the match, Xavier's Kathryn Traut, Michelle Matia, and Chelsea Campbell each finished with double-digit kills, as the Musketeers swept a 3-0 decision from Fordham. Final set scores were 25-18, 25-13, and 25-23.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 10-9 overall, 2-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Xavier improves to 9-6 overall, 2-1 in the league.
Set one saw Xavier get out to a 4-0 lead, before Fordham rallied for eight straight points, capped by a Kailee May kill. Fordham continued to lead until a block by Xavier tied the score at 11. The teams rallied back-and-forth to 16 all before four straight points by Xavier, giving the Musketeers a 20-16 lead that they would not relinquish.
The second set was all Xavier, as it jetted out to a 13-4 edge early on and cruised to a 25-13 victory.
Fordham tried to get back into the match in set three, as the score was tied on 17 different occasions with seven lead changes. The final tie score came at 23 all on a kill by Fordham's Katie Wells. The Musketeers however got consecutive kills from Claire Paszkiewicz and Chelsea Campbell to close out the match in three sets.
For Fordham, Wells had a team-high eight kills with May and Brittany Daulton registering five kills each. Christi Griffiths added four kills and four blocks with Randi Ewing adding four kills and three blocks.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Saturday, October 2nd, when the Rams play at 20th-ranked Dayton, beginning at 7:00 PM.
